Unhappy No Heater...?

I have had no heater for some time now and just wondering what are the possibilities?

It's a 1993 V6 VR Berlina with Climate Control.
Both heater pipes under dash are hot as.
Is there a heater tap? All I see is a white bit of plastic...Does a VR Berlina with Climate Control have one? Is it different to all the rest?
I think there is a Water Temp Sensor on the heater core pipe somewhere?
Maybe I'm missing this or just see it?

When I re flushed the coolant awhile ago I forgot to put the heater on but I don't think there is any air within the heating system because I can't hear any bubbles... And I think it was the same before the flush anyway.
It doesn't work with the A/C on as well.

Cheers All.

Are you saying you have no heat or no fan
The most common reason for no heat is the heater tap, which is in the engine bay, on the driver's side, it has 4 hoses connected to it. But since you say the heater pipes in the car are hot, then the tap is probably OK.

mmmm there is no heater tap under the hood with 4 hoses going into it, there's just that heater valve with a spring action bit of metal going into it and also one hose.
And yes fan is all good, just no heat...
Cheers

If the pipes inside the car are boiling hot, then the heating system (coolant circulation wise) is working correctly. Sounds like one of the sensors may not be giving the climate module the correct reading, for example, the outdoor ambient sensor might be saying its 35 deg C outside, and the system takes that into account thinking that heating is not required. The other thing is that it could be the air mix door not working properly, therefore only allowing cool air in, and completely bypassing the hot air created from the heater circuit. If you run a diagnostic code check on the Climate system you should be able to work out where the problem lies.

Ok big thanks Harvs82. I'll do diag check on the CC.
But when you say:

"the outdoor ambient sensor might be saying its 35 deg C outside, and the system takes that into account thinking that heating is not required."

I would of thought this was only for the automatic operation?

No, the system relies on information from the sunlight sensor, air con evaporator sensor, interior temp sensor and exterior temp sensor in order to create the temperature specified on the system. Say its 5 degrees outside, and you have the system set to 23 degrees, the system uses the info from the exterior sensor and interior sensor and sunlight sensor to deduce that its colder in the car than the temp specified on the display. Therefore it will use a large amount of air that will pass through the heater core and through the warm air section of the air mix door. Once the temperature of 23 degrees is reached, the air mix door will change the ratio of hot and cold air from full heat to a mix of mainly fresh outside air but still with a little bit of warm air to maintain your desired temperature.

In regards to the AUTO mode, this allows the system to automatically turn the A/C on if the cabin becomes too hot, as well as automatically selecting which vents are required for your set temperature, ie when heating the air is directed at your feet, then as the cabin warms up you get warm air on your feet and cool on your face, and then when the cabin reaches the set temp it will only blow air from the face vents. In addition to this, the fan speed is also automatic, so when heating when cold the fan will come on at a high speed once the coolant has warmed up, and then gradually reduce speed as the cabin warms up.

The best way to run the system is to switch it into AUTO mode, and then turn off the airconditioning, as its just a waste of petrol especially in winter. That way the system still keeps every other mode in automatic, except that it won't use the airconditioning at all. When I had my Berlina this is what I used to do, and then in Summer, say on days over 28 degrees I would just run the AUTO mode, which worked very well, and even with the airconditioning running, it didn't make that much difference to fuel usage, as the airconditioning only cuts in and out to maintain the set temperature, it doesn't run flat out.

Sorry for the long post, but hopefully that gives you an insight on the system. Perhaps try running the AUTO mode, and turning off the A/C and see how you go. MANUAL will appear on the display, but the fan icon will have an A next to it.

Yeah thanks Harvs for all of that, I appreciate it very much.
I did try the auto mode today and turned the A/C off with the auto fan still on like you suggested but still no heat.
The pipes are boiling hot, I remember awhile ago I put my toe on it to see if it was hot and burnt my self lol. Today I also checked each one just to be sure it wasn't just one.

So it all comes down to a sensor right?
Have you got that diagnosis info on hand? I had it somewhere on my pc but can't seem to find it...Maybe it was on the other one. But I think it was for a VS but I guess it's all the same.

And that hot/cold air mix door, where is this located?
I know the one behind the glove box but I think this is the recirculate and fresh air one.

Cheers Again.

Yeah the one behind the glovebox is the fresh air / recirculate one. I'm not too sure where the air mix door is, but I would imagine it is somewhere beind the dash past the heater box I would expect. It could be that giving the incorrect reading, or another sensor.

Here is the link to the diagnostics page on this site: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...stic-check.pdf

Have a look through that and see how you go. Just a thought, have you pressed your ambient button to see what the outside temp is showing?
