Default In need of a new clutch

    hey guyes,

firts post here!, i have a 1995 V6 VS series1 5 speed manual wagon and my clutch is nearly gone, iv adjusted it out as much as i can but it has a bad shudder under power and you can really feel it in the pedal. i was told by the mechanic that it would be about $300-400 bux to put a new one in (not including clutch installisation only). does this price sound about right? also what HD clutches are are out their and what what one is the best value for money. Also im after some king springs or simular how low are the "super low" springs? on 16's. i just gave the mechanic anouther call, he said the standard clutch will do just the same job as a HD clutch its just that a HD clutch is just havier so better for towing etc. is this true? iv got a HD clutch in it now. so im going to need the flywheel to be machined to get rid of the shudder and will a standard clutch be fine then? im on my p's and it prob will have a bit of a hard time somtimes.

    cheers Ryan

It might be just me but i aleays go HD when i do a clutch, only problem is they are heavy but if you got one already then you know how they feel. I aint got much experiance on clutches, but i would suggest you supply the clutch to the mechanic so they dont put some dodgy reco crap. Do some searching with google and go to a local brake and clutch joint and pick their brains if no one here can help with a good brand, and put a new cable in to when you do it.

Sounds expensive for labor only. The Reaper Motorsport would do it for around $200 + parts. If you have a getrag box then machining the fly is not possible and you may need a replacement.

No probs with skimming the fly. Hard to say if your motor sucks (Is it a V6?). It may have a leak which should be fixed on the other hand it may be normal. Would need to hear it in person.

Doubt it, did you machine the flywheel or it may be getting some oil on it. My new one did that for a bit, but once the flywheel seasoned it was ok.

exedy clutches have always worked well for me.
I have had troubles with PBR clutches before.

A HD clutch will have the same clutch disc but a stronger pressure plate.
This clamps the disc to the flywheel harder. Theres no point buying a standard
clutch when a HD cost pretty much the same.
A button clutch will have pretty much no slip at all but they're a pain in traffic

Reaper: How come a getrag flywheel can't be machined?
How do I tell if i have a getrag or a BW?

They are a dual mass flywheel which ruins the counter weights when you m/c it.

i got an exedy "sports tuff" HD clutch off ebay for $235... i have had no problems with it and it feels much better than the standard clutch... last time i changed the clutch i got the standard one for $280 because i was in a hurry to do it coz it was jammed and i couldnt drive it... so considering that price i think $235 is good.
