    Default Speed stopped working

    Hey guys,

I was using a guide on here to help me replace my dash lights with LEDs, i managed to follow that easily enough but once i put my dash all back together the speedo stopped working... the lights/fuel/rpm etc. are all working fine though, just have no idea how fast i'm travelling.

Any ideas on what i could have done to cause this? I've checked the cluster lines up with the plugs and that appears to be fine... before i removed the dash the speedo itself was working fine. The trip meter and km reading weren't though... could the issue be related?

there is a connector on the back, id say its come off or one of the wires has pulled. Rip th dash out again and have a look

Couldn't find out what was wrong, so i picked up another speedo from Pick n Payless. I knew it was the actual cluster itself as my sister has the same model car and i put her speedo in and it worked fine straight away... so i didn't forget to plug anything back in, it just stopped working.

I have a feeling that the LED's caused it to stop working. Although i'm not sure how that's even physically possible... i'm not sure whether i should try placing the LED's in the replacement speedo or not.

Is it possible for the LED's to cause the speedo to stop working?

not to risk killing ur new speedo. Take the LEDS outta ur old speedo and put that in. If it works then it is the LEDS, if not then i dunno hahah

Just give that a try first mate.

Already tried that one. No luck unfortunately. The weird part is that the LED's were working fine, and i can't see how they could effect the actual speedo.

Have you tried giving the top of the dash pad a bit of a whack with a closed fist, not too hard, just a firm whack. Enough to see the needles jump a little. Try that!! (either stationary or driving, doesn't matter) Works for sticky guages, ie fuel, temp and speedo. They tend to "dry out" on the solder join.

If it's a VR Series 2 (with the speed alert) try holding down the speed up / speed down buttons (at the same time) as you start your car. This should switch it to a digital speedo. If this works.. means your cluster is receiving a signal and passing it on to the speed alert unit.

Otherwise check the wiring on the plugs (that go into the cluster) make sure they're all terminating OK into the plug.

Be careful taking the cluster in / out. I've wrecked 2 so far as the green circuit board rips so easily.

Only the high series VRs will have the speed alert. LEDs wont have anything to do with it. I bet that there is simply a damaged track there somewhere. I would pull apart completely and just keep looking.
