Sounds like the little wheel / cog behind the speedo has broken, its a fairly common problem and can be replaced, although it requires the instrument cluster to be taken out. If you do a search on here, you should be able to find plenty of info, and I think someone might have written a guide on how to replace the cog too.

easy and cheap enough to replace. You can get another dash cluster from a wrecker to replace it if you dont feel comfy enough to fix the odometer...
As harvs82 stated, there is a thread on how to remove the cluster in the forum. Use the search function to find it.
If you do swap clusters remember to write down the old odometer reading before you get rid of it.
