Hey guys,
I'm pretty positive my harmonic balancer is shot.. well, I am positive..
It has a nice chunk out of it, but, I'm not getting any noise and it doesn't seem to wobble, or affect the way the motor is running, hoping to do it on friday, whats the risk of driving it real easy for a few days?
If i hear a ticking, just stop and tow it home? or do these things just let go without making a noise at all? I've been told of pulleys ending up through bonnets...
cheers!
mate , thats a decision for you to make. have a good look at it, check for any more cracks in the rubber that could cause it to let go.
they dont really tick for long, they just seem to loose a massive chunk at revs lol. Its not really that hard to change, i mean u need about 250ft/lb of pressure on a breaker bar, but yer, it can be done at home
well I can get a rattle gun easy enough, just need a chance to do it,
mate reckons if its not ticking or anything it should be ok, but just drive easy and bail if it starts to tick, will be getting done at the latest on friday,
****tin myself though haha.. sucks that it happens on the week i start longer hours at work, so im not home until 6:30.. Might get the mate to pick me one up tomorrow and do it when i get home..
might be an idea, with a rattle gun its a 5 min job.
drop the tension off the belt, rip the balancer off, new one on, belt on. Start it to make sure its not wabbling like mad and its all good. From memory its 242ft/lb to tension, but its not too important, as long as u dont split or crush the balancer
yeah i'll ask him, hes a night worker.. so itll be in the morning, just pray the easy driving will help her last, whats the cheapest place to get them, about $80 from super cheap eh?
think theyre a bit more than that. good chance youll need a puller as well

i found the best way to undo the nut on the balancer and has worked everytime is to use a large breaker bar and wedge it against the chassis rails, then just turn the key. but make sure yo have taken out the ecu fuse so it wont start.
the engine cranks the opposit way. works perfect every time.
You'l be looking at about $150 for a V6 one you'll pay about $80 for a v8 one. I would take the belt off and see if you can turn it and check for cracks. You will need a puller more than likely to get it off i havent come across a v6 yet that i didnt need a puller.

If the chunk of rubber missing is next to the metal hub or the ring I'd get the balancer changed quickly as the ring and hub can spin independently screwing up your timing and leaving you potentially with a big tow bill home.
