Default VS V8 Wagon fuel issues

    Hey guys.
I have recently picked up a VS V8 berlina auto for a bit of fun and something to work on so i dont stuffup and damage my daily.
Since I had it there has been some issues with the fuel supply.
Basically just after I got it I had it on a bit of a hill and lowish petrol and it stalled and would not start, so I chucked 5 litres in and it started no probs so I thought it was on a hill, low fuel fair enough.
But more recently I was on a ramp in a shopping centre for about 5 mins just idling with about 1/2 tank and was running fine untill I hit the flat and it then stalled.
I tried to start it and it would not turn over but there was plently of fuel, so someone helped me push it out of the way of traffic and then once it had moved I when to kick it over and it started 1st go.

The other day it was displaying about 1/4 of a tank when i was going down the street and it stalled and would not crank and then the danm fuel gauge went down to very low and it wouldnt start (this was on flat but it was still displaying fuel in the tank).
I walked 5 KM in the boiling hot then back in the pouring rain (just my luck) chucked 5 litres in it and started fine went and put another 30 litres in and no problems.
Last night I decided to fill it up and the danm thing only took 22 litres.
So all up it only took 57 litres and I would have used at least 5 since I put the 30 litres in it.
Now Im pretty sure it has a 68 litre tank in it (please correct me if im wrong) and when i filled to the brim it was only displaying 63 litres on the trip computer (the sedan sized tank).
I know there is a switch on the back of the clusted for 63 litres or 75 and im assuming its set to the lower setting but this would mean that when on empty it would still have fuel and it has never been on empty or had the fuel light go off on me.
The only thing i can think is that the fuel pump wont pump unless there is a good 5 - 10 litres in the tank but im not too sure.
Any one have any thoughts ??

(Sorry bout the huge post guys)

Weird thing also, I cant check the faults.
I have tried bridging the connection (Ive done it before in my old VS V6) but when I do the engine light flashes once and thats it, it wont flash in sequence.

Fuel pump wont log faults anywayz if its it, but whats that return line that dumps fuel back into the swirl pot, maybe thats disconnected in the tank somwhere.
