what oil is best to use in VS V6. duel fuel, 210k on clock. especially on the gas, first thing in the morning when its cold, i hear this ticking when idling. ive read it could be something to do with valves and luberication? valves are new
oil topics are always controversial on here ... so i'll just stick to the facts. That ticking sound can be caused by poor flow of the oil when cold. 20W50 oils in particular, though they are generally the best for ecotecs over all. You could try something with a lower cold viscosity like 15W50 ... something like Shell Helix Plus for example. Check out a few differnt brands of 15W50 in the $30-$40 range and see which ones say they are suitable for both petrol and gas. Also check out the Oil poll on here and ask VX calais, see what he thinks.
thanks, thats what i thought. what exactly does the 15W40 etc relate to? also wheres the oil poll.
15w40 refers to the viscosity . . . . google it
The long and short of it is the lower the first number, the quicker the oil circulates through the engine when cold, as the viscosity is like having a thinner oil, and the second number is the hot ie operating temperature viscosity.
Modern engines especially turbo ones require lightweight oils, for example my Liberty requires 5w-30 or 10w40 synthetic oil. I used to run 20w50 in my Berlina, did so for 5 years and never had any issues. I changed the oil every 5000km, and it never burned anything, the only oil it lost was from the rear main seal leaking. 200,000km no problems at all. I'm pretty sure that Mobil do a 15w40 oil thats suitable for engines on gas, but I'd just stick to 20w50, especially if you have got a few km on board. Change it regularly, ie 5000km intervals and you should be fine. If you put an oil in thats too thin, not only will everything not be lubricated properly, the oil will also get burnt off quickly and you will be forever topping it up.
You can also try some Nulon products, like their engine oil flush, as that may clean out some gunk in the oil galleries and pickup etc, enabling better flow of the new engine oil that you put in.
thanks, ive learnt a fair bit from these forumns, very useful
The oil Poll is in the polls section ... where everyone votes on stuff, you'll find it on the main page i think.
castrol is **** oil thats why you see the sludge in you rocker covers etc etc
do those engine flush things that u put in before an oil change actually do anything. im thinkin when i do it; oil, filter, this nulon 80k treatment anything else. also whats the life of one of those cheap paper air filters?
Used to be the case with Castrol GTX because it didn't like cold starts. Castrol haven't had that problem for a long time now.
To answer the question though, the best oil to use is any 20W50. Doesn't matter about the brand because they are all basically the same at that viscosity.
um well actually holdens used to be straight mobil everything then they went to castrol and hence the reason when tearing down my v8 i nearly had to grind the gunk away.
and as far as the oil flush things the only issue you face is how much gunk is in the engine
1:is the gunk helping the engine and 2: will the gunk you get going around the engine block the pick up and stuff the engine
May be a problem with the mixing of the different additives in the two oils. When changing brands or weight it is always a good idea to flush in between.
20-50w on higher K motors, i used penzoil in my v6 and it was fine.
But if you want to make power, i spoke to my mate who owns a performance workshop and he said he did tests and a Brand called royal purple gave the best power output on the dyno
