    Thumbs down VS Quarter Panel...

    Hey guys...

Wasn't too sure on where to post but I thought since it is a VS commodore I would post it here.

My quarter panel is damaged as indicated by the pictures.

I don't really know where to start or what to think.

    Help?

And my fuel cap release hatch doesn't work haha.. Good ol screw in the boot.

I don't have much money to take home from work each week and I dont know if I can rip the quarter panel off or not either..

first obvious question - how did that sort of damage happen?

Second question - do any of the 'lumps' come out past where they panel should have originally been? For a cheap repair you can bog fill and sand, will take quite a few coats but wont cost you much.
White is easy to paint patch too.

It looks nasty but not beyond repair. If you had the money you'd have it cut and replaced.

Sorry i can't be more exact.

Well the damage was there when I got the car from Albany World Of Cars. The salesman didn't know how the damage came to be there.. the car is from Bridgetown in country WA so who knows :P

And secondly from physical glance, none of the lumps come out further than what the original panel would. Dad also thinks the bog, fill and sand will be the solution.. just trying to get other peoples opinions.

it'll be a fair bit of work, timewise. but you'll get out of it cheap enough. Could be one of those frustrating things where each time you think it's right you spot another ripple.

Head to supercheap, grab a $30 big tub of bog and go for it. At the very worst you end up getting the panel replaced at a greater cost by a beater later on.

    lol constructive mate.
He asked because yes, it is ****ed and he obviously knows it - so, well spotted buddy!!!!

I'm tipping he's use more than a kilo, but would sand a fair bit of that back out.

A professional repair job on the rear panel would involve cutting the entire panel out and welding in a replacement panel thats been cut out of another vs. Pretty expensive job i'd imagine, if your short on money your best bet is to knock out as much as possible with a hammer on the inside of the boot, then bog, sand and paint as already mentioned

I could tell it was ****ed the day I got it but I needed a car and well here I am with it now haha. I've been avoiding it like the plague but now I have some 17's coming, the only thing people will notice is that quarter panel. The guy who had it before me did a s**t repair job like the dogs dinner and now its left to me and the old man. With summer coming on I don't really mind but since I'll have the license in 3 weeks I want to get it done asap.

Would anyone know a certain time frame I am looking at to do this. The old man and I are keen on this cept I really don't know how long I'm looking at for this task.

if hes gonna spend that long bogging it he might as well unpick the welds and replace the quarter, you'll need to remove the rear window and bumper, there is a line of spot welds you have to unpick and cut the quater near the sill and roof.

take the trims off around the rear glass - i don't know how but it wont take long.
give the paint a light sand, not through it, just enough to take the shine off it (if there is any!).
Mix your bog and lather it on where it needs it the most. give it a good 12 hours to dry in good weather, probably 24 to be safe then sand it smooth. You should then see where it needs more bog so go through the process again. You could do this 10 times before you are happy with it or you might get lucky (or lazy) and have it sorted out in 3.
spray some spray filler on it. let that dry. hit it with some wet sandpaper, undercoat and paint.
If you are hardcore you'll do it in a week.

Someone will add the bits i missed - this is how i fixed/patched my datsun and it usually came up alright.

orbital sander and your on a winner. buff it down, bog it up half a day after u slam the bog on buff the bitch. go to your local auto shop, buy some primer, and spray cans that suit your paint code and some clear coat . then start taking your time

The guy who did the dodgy repair job just used spray cans. There is no shine haha... literally.

Besides the panel the car is great... may have 237,000 on the clock but its still a nice car.

So I might just hold off till I find a sunny week.. (Albany weather pffft) and then go from there..

Buddy, I've got a ding in the exact same spot. Mines worse though (I collected a light post), so I wont be bogging it.
The best quote I got was $500 from a dodgy panel beater, and thats if I dropped it off to him with most of the prep work done, ie taking out seats, quarter window, rear bar etc.

    Just an update on it...

Typical Albany weather atm (never get a sunny week) and dad is using my car as his van has carked it (It's Ford... with a mazda engine :P) so it's been put off just for that little bit longer. But thank you everyone with their suggestions.

I will keep you all updated e.g. when I start blah e.g.
