    Default annoying problem (clunk)

ok heres the story, I have just (1 week ago) replaced all the suspension bushes (every one...front and back except the front control arm inner bushes on the front of car, as they were still like new and looked like a prick to press in and out lol but they were fine as i checked them ) tie rod ends, ball joints, struts/shocks, springs spring insulators, strut tops and strut top bearings, stabaliser bar rubbers and heavy duty links , everything except the rack and front wheel bearings on my VS.

I have this very annoying clunk that seems to be coming from the front left when i reverse while turning the wheel, it also does it around some corners. Now this is not the result of me doing the above work as it has been there for about 1 month now. the clunk is not just "CLUNK" it kinnda a rubbing clunk noise....also engin and gearbox mounts were replaced and was still doing it before i replaced those (although there was nothing wrong with old ones) car has 80 000 on the clock.

not the exhaust as i recently replaced that with a red back system and all new exhaust rubbers

alls i can put it down to is ether the rack or wheel bearing..or where the strut top secures to the tower....but i did check these when i was doing the work and it all seemed fine.....i may check the cross member bolts are tight tomorrow. other then that i am out of ideas.

    any help would be appreciated

Is the sway bar nice n tight too? That can be a big cluncker in the front ends.

But if your rack bolts were loose I think you'll be on the money with that.

pop the hood, lift it right up, if the air compressed thingos holding your hood are a bit worn, hold it with one arm, push down on the front end with the other.

Watch the top of your strut, does it rise above the strut top when the car dips down?

also wack a spanner 24mm? on the nut at the top of the strut, it should turn a little before offering major resistance (dont force it) if it spins with mild resistance, it may be too loose or the strut top rubber mount is stuffed/too soft I have been through Kelpro and Holden strut top rubbers, both turned out rubish, only the pedders ones made me happy as both other brands allowed my strut to travel.

yeh i had problems with brand new strut tops ...they both flogged out majorly on teh first week so i replaced with mackay ones and its all good now (this is when i replaced them about 1 month ago)...but i think i have narrowed it down to the bonnet flexing (may need adjustment to stop rubbing) and the rack bolts as the noise has nearly dissapered cheers

Is the bonnet latch spring bolt tight? That was a very annoying rattle on my VN for several months before I found it was loose. Over rough roads it would rattle away. I took just about everythink off the car looking for it. Even the front gaurd....rattle rattle.

In the end I got the local mechanic to sit in the front and said it may be the bonnet as that was moving a bit at the time of the rattle. Looked at the hinges as you would - but no not them as they were not loose. Then looked at the pin and bugga me it was loose as. Soooooo happy when I found that one I can tell you.

I recently discovered a knocking/ticking noise that sounded like the electrical arial was loose, was actually the air con high pressure lines right up the front, sound travels in funny ways.

I also had a worn passenger side engine mount that was rubbing on the K frame that sounded like the trans was about to spit parts everywhere, and a mechanic told it me it sounded like the crank was about to spin intself to ****?

all i'm trying to say is sound travels in funny ways through a car, so many vessels to travel along, and so many cavities to echo in.
