Going to put a 6 speed gearbox out of vy into my vs ute. Before I go ahead and spend the cash, wanted to know if there is much work involved in it. Do I have to change anything else such as the tail shaft. Do the t56 gear boxes also hydraulic clutches like the getrag. any feed back much appreciated
i pretty sure the T56 would be hydrolic, have a look at the bell housing, see if it is the same as the Gtrag, i dont see why it wouldnt be. The tail shaft may need changing, so will the extension housing and the loom may need to be slightly adjusted with a new plug for the speedo transducer. Because of the new ratios of the gear box the speedo may be out so the need for a speedo correction kit will be needed in this case.
can i ask, why do u want to go 6sp over the 5 speed?
I've just been told I may have to change the diff ratio any one heard of this and why. is there anyone that has done this conversion
you will definitly need to change the diff ratio. factory S3 VS ute will have 3.08:1 gears. the factory diff ratio with the T56 is 3.46:1 even with that ratio 6th gear is almost unusable unless yuo wanna cruise at 1430rpm @ 100km/h. thats to low even for V8 unless you like to labour the engine. with a 3.08 ratio that drops to approx 1280rpm.
the ideal ratios for a factory T56 box is minimum 3.7:1 but better to have 3.9:1 and for those that like to take of quick i'd suggest 4.11:1
best to ask stealthy about ratio's he has a T56 behind his 5lts international calais with 3.7's in the diff. you will need to mod the driveshaft and possibly the trans cross member. from memory the bellhousing should bolt straight up as both the 5ltr (304) and the ls1/ls3 use the same turbo pattern. not sure on the hydraulic clutch however.
why not contact malwood automotive (gearbox specialists) and pick his brain

You'll need a spacer plate because the input shaft is too long. Thing it'll need to be 6mm. 5 of the 6 bolts from bell-housing should line up to block. You also need to do bit of grinding for starter to fit. Not sure what mounts and crossmember to use. Castlemaine Rod Shop and the like might have some off the shelf to use. Now for tailshaft i believe rear half needs to be shortened to around 490mm.
just as well you've already got the hydraulic master cylinder/pedal box you only have to get some line made up and away ya go as far as that bit goes, thats all i can do to help.... i dunno bout the diff crossmember thing i have seen one in a vp ute with standard crossmember but he did make his own mount..
A mate mentioned using the T56 tremec out of a vr do these exist and are they the same box as the vy. Also would they be a straight swap
