how to tell if car is Series 1 or 2

hey guys just looking at a second VS for the GF and stumbled across a nice tidy VS, it is September 96 with 7hdd tranny im pretty sure its S2

by the looks but has had all the badges deleted, im wondering how to tell if these are S1 or S2 is there a way to check with the plate on the firewall ??

It was built after June 1996 and before august 1997, it's a Series II AFAIK.
