My rear muffler in the VR wags has rusted out a fair bit, the question i wanted to ask was can i legally remove the rear muffler......leaving the pipe short or will i have to weld on a section to take it right to the rear of the car.
Also, im assuming this will affect the sound of the car (stock exhaust) and fuel efficency?
Any help is appreciated as always.
you can legally remove the rear muffler but you will have to extend the exhaust, the exhaust note might change a little bit but i think ur fuel economy will stay the same
shouldn't affect the sound 2much and could improve fuel economy cause of less restriction
ahhh, cheers guys, wasnt too sure.......just didnt want to replace the muffler if i didnt have to![]()
It will change the sound slightly when its hot. you might get a few crackles etc.. but not a whole lot..
and yeah.. you should extend it but its often overlooked if your car isnt loud. they wont mind just make sure you cut the pipe after the diff and youll be fine
You want to extend it for sure or fill the cab with exhaust fumes.
Before this thread dies i was just wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a Holden VS Ute and well am looking at removing the rear muffler for a little more noise out of my whittle V6. My question though, is it legal/illegal to dump the exhaust under my ute before the diff as in this picture
My car is no where near that low or anything but i was just wondering if this is or isn't legal and if anyone could link me to the law stating what it is? All i have been able to hear/read is it has to be dumped at least 30cm back from the last door which on a ute shouldn't be a problem?
Any info is much appreciated
Thanks
Matt
I would like to know the law about this to.
Right now ive just got mine dumped just before the full tank. All I have done was saw off the rear resinator as close to it as i could to remove it then left it. On a stock VN no one picked i didnt have a exhaust, altho now with SS rear there's more of a mould for it so you can noticeBut have had cops behind me for a while, had then pull me over, no word about it.
Once they pulled me over when i had it off just after the FIRST muffler, with a fuel car of teenages and a red P they didnt say anything, i can tell you i was going very easy on the throttle leaving that!
lol, i bet theres some people in it (i mean alot), or its bagged.

Ok guys found a bit more info. Here is the car (Or should i say UTE) that i am talking about and i bet your all surprised :P Its NefariousLS1 car from the LS1 forums.
What i would like help with though is this info on the SA Exhaust Laws. Can anyone help me translate this into something i would understand eg. Key Dot Points?
Division 2—Exhaust systems
148—Exhaust systems
(1) The outlet of the exhaust system fitted to a motor vehicle (except a bus) must extend:
(a) behind the back seat; and
(b) at least 40 millimetres beyond the outermost joint of the floorpan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed; and
(c) to the edge of the vehicle, if:
(i) the body of the vehicle is permanently enclosed; and
(ii) the vehicle is not fitted with a vertical exhaust system; and
(d) no further than the edge of the vehicle at its widest point.
(2) The outlet must discharge the main exhaust flow to the air:
(a) if the vehicle is fitted, or required under a law of this jurisdiction to be fitted,
with an exhaust system with a vertical outlet pipe:
(i) at an angle above the horizontal; and
(ii) at least 150 millimetres above the cab of the vehicle; and
(iii) rearwards or to the right of the vehicle; and
(b) in any other case:
(i) horizontally or at an angle of not over 45
(ii) under 750 millimetres above ground level; and
(iii) rearwards or to the right of the vehicle.
What i would really like to know is if it is actually legal on my VS Ute to do what the owner has done in my first post? Because quite frankly i got no clue what that legislation means
Any help on the above would be great
Thanks
