Hi,
I have a 5L vr ute, its done 170xxx kms but it is a good running motor.
However the last two days the oil pressure light has come on during a cruise at about 80-100 km/h. after about 20 seconds or so it goes away! but im worried. is this a common problem with the 304ci?
also the fuel gauge doesnt work! is that also common?
any help would be great,
marty
fuel gaugue is very common bu thats not what you should be worried about, i wouldnt be driving your car anywhere, or starting it for that matter until you can verfiy whther you have low oil pressure or not, although it may be as simple as the oil pressure switch.
If it is infact an oil blockage the main culprit is usually the oil pickup in the sump.
i had the same thing the day i bought mine. the oil was shiit and blocked/****ed the oil pickup. i have to hit my dash to get my fuel gauge to work too.
in regards to the fuel and/or temp guage being sticky, the cluster needs to be dismantled and have the board resoldered to fix the problem
my oil light came up also when I got mine turned out it was a combo of crap oil, low oil level and dodgy sender
Mine threw me an oil light the day I got it too. In a 5 litre it usually a blocked pickup, but could also be a dodgy sender or pump. Have a look in the oil cap, if the motor is sludged up pretty good then it's likely to be the pickup. Mine was fairly blocked when I got it but it still flowed enough to come good with lots and lots of oil changes with oils that clean well. Mobil Delvac is a good oil to run through them to slowly clean it out, it's got alot of detergents. Try swapping to that and change the filters each thousand ks for a few thousand and the oil say each 3,000. That should clean it out at least everywhere the oil is flowing under high pressure. I know it's a bit of a hassle but its easier than pulling the motor out and cleaning the pickup

i cant belive they kept on using the same size pickup (3cm diameter) after experiencing this same problem up to & including the vl v8, come on holden get your finger out your rectum!
The old 308s have a HUUUUUUGE pickup (you can swap it on), I'm not sure when they moved to the small one but it wasn't until near the VN I think
