hey all,
my heater tap blew up over the weekend ive fixd it and the cars running
HOWEVER
now shes overheating, she normaly runs about 1 point off the bottom of the gauge, and 2 if im rinigin its neck, now though shes sitting at half way up the guage, this is not normal for the car, any idears on what could have happned/causing this? and if so how do i fix it?
btw im still learnin my stuff so put it in moron speak aswell as normal speak hahahaha
cheers
and thanks in advance
Half way is normal, sounds like your car was under-heating before! Not sure about the VS's, but on the VT's if you put the trip computer into "secret mode" you can get a digital temp reading. Should read between about 80-90C (give or take for traffic and ambient conditions).
sweet as ill have a look, but i shouldnet be worried right?
thanks heaps for your help!!
Yep, my girlfriends got a VS and it sit`s on half all the time and when your at the lights on a hot day it creeps up to 3/4, bloody thermos.
A stupid question but... did you bleed the system after having it open to replace the heater tap? If so, how?
my car sits on 1/4 all the time and thermos kick in at 1/2 never goes above 1/2
You don't need to bleed the cooling system in a Holden V8, it happens automatically. Just leave the radiator cap off, turn the heater to hot, start the engine and top up the radiator as the bubbles appear. When the coolant starts to leak from the radiator cap, replace the cap and top up the overflow tank. You may have to top up the overflow tank once or twice over the next couple of days as the cooling system gets rid of any remaining air. Make sure you use the proper coolant - in my view you can't go past the genuine Holden article.
On the Ecotec there is a screw on top of the themostat, you bleed it through there.
Check radiator and overflow.

yup sure did, first (engine off!!) thing i did was fill it up till you can see it in at a constant level were the radiator cap goes with antifreze/boil mixed with water (i wanted to use gin but thought that would be a bad thing, hahaha, just kiddin) then took the lid top thing off the engine (the bit with 3.8l v6 on it, i dont no what that bits called) undid the bleed screw (were the radiator hose joins to the engine) turned the car over and had a smoke for 10 mins while the water ran through (watching it the whole time!!), toping up as necicery, untill there was prety much a constant stream of water coming from the bleed hole, then i put the radiator cap back on then screwd the screw back in (bleeding screw), put the cover back on and she was sweet :-)
btw youll prob notice some water pooling up ontop of the engine (thanks to the bleed) dont worry about it, its normal and will just drain away or evaporate
also, shes now running about half way up the gauge, reguarly, with no majior problems, thanks for your help guys, you helpd lower my hart rate on that day lol

yup its a v6 ecotec not a v8, i hope my post on how to bleed was helpfull, if you need more info than that just ask, ill be happy to help, its an easy process but if you dont know what your doing it can be confuzing, i will warn you tho, its very important to make sure youve got plenty of antifreze/boil around (i mix mine in a old coke bottle just before i start bleeding the radiator then ive allways got some on hand and mixd) also its not a fast process, it takes 10 to 20 mins maby more-you dont have to bleed it prefictly just bleed it till theres mostly water coming out of the bleed hole then wait another 2-3 mins then replace the radiatorcap and the bleed screw, and top up the overflow box, then take her for a drive (shell do the rest)
also make sure you hose off any antifreze/boil on your drive way/garage floor, that s*it kills cats/dogs and prety much anything else (just a warning)
good luck with it bro![]()
s*it i should tell you a slightly faster way to do it 2!!!
if you want to do the bleed faster, you can do a forced bleed - this one is great fun!
do all the other stuff - take the lid thing off, undo the bleed screw and obviouslye take off the radiator cap, next grab the garden hose and turn it on (not to hard) stick it into the radiator fill hole (were the radiator cap goes - sorry dont no the name of it) and cup your hand around it to create a seel, then wait till the water squirts out of the bleed hole, then finnish up as you normaly would, antifreeze/boil (use the concentrate) turn the engine on, make sure shes fully bled then replace all caps, screws and lids and top up the overflow
its a p!ss easy process and kinda fun, and now you know what your doin im sure youll be able to enjoy it a lil more
have fun bro
