Hi guys,,
i'm thinking about changing the colour of my dash's light to white or blue..
does anyone know how to remove cluster? also, are there any backing plate behide the cluster to make the lights go green? or just the green lights behide the cluster?
i'm getting blue or white LED lights soon
Cheers
I can, what state?
As for the "backplate" yes that is green...the lights are white
I'm on the Coast NSW
if i'm getting the Blue LED lights and put them behide the Green 'backplate',, then there not gonna turn blue!!,, how can i get rid off those backplate??
cheers
Mine are blue, and show as blue, my only problem are the pins are orange, which the blue doesn't go trhough..., best option would be to ask phreddy about how to get rid of the back plate.
I'm pretty sure there is a hot to somewhere, I'm not 100% on how a VR/VS dash comes out...But basically, once it's out the back looks like this and there are 4 globes for the main section (and about 50,000 at the bottom for the signal/warning ones) (the brown circle things in the pic), they twist out, you take the globe out and put new globe in holder, then twist back in
The globes used to light it up are a T10 globe, there are new LEDs out that are in a T10case n just fit up like the old bulbs but come in a heap of diff cols.
There are sum that have a concave lens so the light gets spread further n u dont get the hot spots like with normal LEDS.
I had sum they were ok on orig dash but once i got a white one they looked crap n went out n got sum CCFL tubes from jaycar/work n used them as they spread the light more evenly.
How well does the dim function work with LED's? I was under the impression that they were basically on or off, very little difference in varying light intensities. Would be good to hear some real life experiences though.
The easiest way is to change the fascia. There a couple of sellers around, were some on ebay. You remove the instrument cluster and replace the fascia, you can have a different coloured lens, have some custom graphic put on there, a different colour fasica.

Just make sure you get the polarity correct on the LED or you'll have to remove the whole thing again and swap themI had to do it 3 times before I got them all working.
This is my dash. Globes replaced with blue LED's and stock fascia plate.

Oh, this should help with removing the dash surround...
YouTube - Remove VR/VS commodore dash surround.
Once the dash surround is removed, there are 2 (I think) screws holding the cluster in. Once they are removed, gently pull on the cluster to release it from the 'sockets'. I dunno how to describe them, but pic is below (the blue and orange things)
Then, as lightning VP said, just untwist the bulb holders, remove the bulbs and chuck in the LED's. I just used the same LED's as used in parker globes.
A bit brief, but it's been a while sinceI did it. Hope this helps.
