Ok guys, when i manage to source an ignition coil for my VS Senator i'll obviosuly need to replace it.
How the hell is it done? Never done it before...... Obviously it's a 304 being a Senator![]()
Its easiest to remove the engine covers, remove the distributor cap, then you will have enough room to fit your hand and a spanner down there, its as simple as removing the bracket the coil attaches to then a coil lead and power/earth leads many many people will tell you that you can reach it without removing anything, but these people must have the girlish arms in the world as i could never manage it.

I suggest you disconnect they battery first i'd hate to get zapped by one of them

Sweet thanks dude ^^^, as i am getting a cylinder shaped coil, i'll have to mount the bracket it comes with somewhere.
anyone got a photo of where its meant to be? i need to find a decent place to put mine

It sits right behind the back of the inlet manifold. I had a decent look yesterday, it's going to be a bitch of a job to undo everything and mount this new cylinder coil i have.
If it's a cylinder shaped coil you have the incorrect one, unless you are installing a non-Bosch equivalent.
I was told that it would work but not perform as good as the square black one........
I was under the impression it would still provide spark and get her started, it just won't perform as good as the black square Bosch coil.
Anyone have any idea as to WHERE i should bolt this new coil up?
cobez. this is where mine is for now. cable ties FTW. there was some little piece of metal there which is holding in place. it will do for now until i get a better coil. youll have to extend the wires though, and use a longer spark lead

Extend the wires? What wires? This coil i have just has the male head on it for a lead.........
I guess i'll leave the busted one on there for now, pull the lead off of it, hook it to the new one and bang hopefully she is sweet.
you dont have the two nuts on it for a positive and negative wire? see those in my photo? on either side of the lead

Yeah i have those, but do you hook them to the battery?
nah they go into the loom and go somewhere. not sure where though. hooking up to battery is a bad idea

Fark this is getting annoying. I didn't know **** about a loom i thought i was just plug the lead in and sweet as a nut.
Wanna do mine for me? I'll give ya $50 lol.
The wires dont need to be extended that long, just make sure you use the proper connectors and use electrical tape to seal off the connectors metal surface, also tape the wires neatly out of the way so there not touching any components that are going to heat up. People who do this modification usually secure the coil off onto the passenger side strut tower & has 2 advantages 1- its easy to replace or work on in the future and 2- your giving the coil a bit more life versus the old one as its not directly near any heat source like they are from the factory.
The cylinder shaped coil with the condenser hanging off the side is actually what came out standard on most of the efi 5 litres, if not all of them. It wont make a difference if its in good condition versus the bosch square type in fact even today the cylinder shaped coil is still used on performance cars using the grp a manifold, to keep the original look although they get them chromed to look that little bit better. People will only say there not as good as the newer bosch square coil because when it gets replaced in this day & age its already half cactus, buy a new one and its just as good as the newer style coil.
Id go for a msd blaster series coil which pumps out more juice than both the cylinder shaped and newer style stock replacement coil stuff the standard replacement parts

go the msd one's, i got a high vibration one and it works great and being high vibration should last a long time. also go to autobarn and get a longer lead to suit, they are only $5

pic of where i put mine
"A life lived in fear is a life half lived"
supercheap auto / autobarn / bursons / repco etc will have a replacement coil i put mine in the same spot as the one depicted above as the factory location is just plain stupid
If you do manage to remove the old coil, never EVER [EVER] try and put one back in the original spot. Who ever designed this, or even allowed it to go into production should have been shot! In fact why even try to remove the old one? Leave the damn thing there and just extend [yep not easy] the two cables from it to the new one, where ever you decide to mount it. Some of the pictures provided should be enough to give you a fair idea.
One cable is power and the other is from the ignition module. Then just run a slightly longer HT lead back to the distributor. Sweet!
I just replaced the vacuum line between the brake booster and intake manifold. What a pain in the rear! Why would anyone put the manifold vaccum port in that location, perhaps the same dumb arse designer that also put the coil back there !
That location of the coil was the same for all commodore v8's from vb, they simply must of left it in its place without bothering to replace it, on carby models it is easy as to replace it was just the introduction of the new inlet manifold which made the job an absolute bitch, but hey hard tasks mean more work for mechanics, thats was probably on their mind![]()
Yeah i am having another one fitted friday while i am at work, it's one of the flat square shaped ones, then i am planning on buying one of the MSD Blaster ones, or an ice ignition kit (coil, lead, ignition module etc).
ill take your square one once you upgrade to msd![]()

No worries man. I'm looking into either "Ice" or "Scorcher" gear. Leaning towards "Ice" coil and ignition module....
My VS Clubby is missing quite badly from 2500 RPM upwards and under load as well. It is worse when the weather is hot or after driving for 1/2 hour.
The car also feels like it is constantly down on power but maybe thats me dreaming??
Has anyone experienced this as I believe it may be my coil but arent 100% sure??
It looks like a few of you have replaced coils and I was wondering if anyone had seen any of these symptoms?![]()
