Could be a dodgy steering rack, but I'd imagine that the pump is shot. Can you see where the fluid is leaking? Is it being sprayed around the engine bay or is it leaking from the steering rack or rubber boots? I'd recommend getting a reconditioned pump, much cheaper than a brand new one and just as good. I had one put in my VS Berlina a few years ago, and it was still going fine when I sold the car a few years later.

i can get reco. for $125 , fluid loss is under pump. but when i top it up it loses about 200 ml straight away gushing out of res. so for some reason it is pumping back. think i,ll try reco pump tomorrow and hope for the best. thanks.

i just bought a reco pump for $45 and fitted and found that i coulnt get the resevoir to seal properly, kept leaking out of where the O ring is. its not a real big issue as i have blown up the engine. but both the pumps have had this problem. how can it be fixed?
If it aint broke, dont fix it.
