Hi,
The horn in my VS doesnt work. I have traced it back to the contacts between the steering wheel and the steering column. The pin that pops out of the column doesnt reach the round disc on the wheel. I have removed the steering wheel and though maybe it wasnt seated on the column far enough so tried belting the crap out of it to push it on further. no good. I then discovered that the round disc is mounted on a plastic support that you can pop out the back of the steering wheel so I pushed it through a bit and now it makes contact....BUT the plastic braket eventually works it way back and reseats itself in the wheel so it no longer contacts again.
Is the problem actually my wheel is not far enough on the column or does the pin / disc contacts wear down. Which part do I replace if at all possible?
As carter said its a commom problem the pin wearing down, but you will find it will keep doing the same thing over time this is usually because the steering collum has callapse sligthly puting too much pressure on the pin ,the collums are designed to callapse in an accident so they dont impale the driver
I don't know about a VS but on my old VN which is probably the same I got a fairly large soldering iron and put a big blob of solder on the end of the pin where it contacts the steering wheel ring. It lasted years after that. Next time it wore I soldered a small brass nut on the end and it worked until I sold the car.
You can't replace the pin on it's own it is part of the plastic body which is also the bearing for the column so it's not a simple job to replace with a new one. anyway what I have described will fix your problem for next to nothing assuming you can solder.
Steering column collapsed? I can't see the logic behind that. It's a bearing holder as well and the steering shaft would be located to that and the 2 would not move relative to one another without massive damage to the column or bearing and you'd notice that.
The brass pin and suround will seperate from the shaft and is replaceable I have done 2 in my vp ( they unclip )Have a look in the wreckers the shaft only needs to collaspe by mm 's it wont be noticeable
to put too much pressure on the pin
the shaft is telescopic so it can start to collsape at the steering by a couple of mm or more before affecting the bearings ect
On the subject, does anyone know what kind of Torx screw driver you need to remove the steering wheel cover (plastic thing with holden logo on it) ? Some models have a normal phillips head screw but my Acclaim has a torx.
im having the same problems but i cant get even get my steering wheel off ,koonts how did u remove your's
If you have another steering wheel lying around, which is the reason for taking one off 95% of the time, just attach another gold ring onto the wheel, to double the thickness. Worked for me when I put a calais wheel on the VN
