    Default Hot Feet??

    Hey just commodores members,

i own a 1994 VR commodore executive in excellent condition for its age, bar one thing, when i drive around for 10mins or more, my legs get really hot.

this happens when the air conditiong is on OR off.

the hot air hits my left shin, so in line with the back of the centre console, and also there are two pipes down there, and when touched they are super hot after 10 minutes of driving.

the air conditiong works fine when it is on, both adequately heating and cooling, but the hot air can still come out when it is cooling. the hot air doesnt come out on the passenger side too.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

When i bought my VR i experienced this as well.... at first i thought, Crap , something must be wrong here cause lots of heat was coming in. Now i have just put it down to hot air flowing into the cabin cause it's not exactly sealed very well .... not compared to my missus Toyota avalon Grande .... the plastic interior where ya feet go in front are sealed tight to the carpet.

Nah.. just got used to it and don't really notice it now.... i think i noticed it more cause was used to driving around in the Grande which is a top range model so the cabin is plush with heaps of interior comfort and what you pay for workmanship. I never drive her car now cause it is sooo slow

There is a clip attached to a cable just where the pipe gets hot and it can get dislodged. This prevents the heater tap turning off. Normally when the air selector is set to cold the heater tap will be off and the pipes in the picture will be stone cold. If they get hot this means the heater switch is not operating correctly probably due to the clip being dislodged.
This pipe should only get hot when the heat/cold selector is in the red section.

Hako is correct. however i've just had a look at hte pic you provided and the clip is secure, however the previous owner (or possibly the person who did the sound intall) had it loose at some stage and didn't put it back correctly. when you turn the heater control to full cold have a look at the white plastic bracket that the metal rod is attached too (when you turn the temp control to hot it should move towards the front of the car) whne turning to full cold the white plastic arm should push against a little black valve with vacuum lines attached. the valve controls the vacuum to the heater tap (and shut of the hot coolant from coming into the cabin)

as for the problem with air always blowing at your feet, it sounds like one of the vacuum lines has come off the control unit. you would need to remove the front facia from the stereo/air con controls and remove the control unit and see if any of the vac lines have been dislodged or cracked etc

... hot flushes are generally symptomatic of menapause. Are you also feeling tired & irritable, with a need to blame your problems on those around you?

    If so - menapause.

whats the answer to this if you have climate rather than aircon?

air blows only onto feet now, Im sure it worked when I first got the Calais, but not now....

Had the same problem (hot pipes) used the method above and worked a treat
I had to put the white clip right a the end of the thread on the rod (closest end to the the back of the car) to release the clip insert a small flat head screwdriver in the joint and turn and it clicks/pops off and then reposition it.
it does not spin down the thread when you turn it!

^ it's all true, I picked up my VP on a 38c day with fires all over Victoria, I drove it home 3 hours from Geelong with wobbly retreads and the heater stuck on :P, great fun. That little white thing needed taking off and putting back on properly

    Heater pipes getting hot

Read down to this post: Heater pipes getting hot

When you turn the temperature fully cold (anti-clockwise) you should hit this vavle which will stop hot water running through these pipes. Instructions are there on how to adjust. If you turn it fully cold and the taps are getting hot you need to do some more adjustment.

    Default heat on feet

I had the same problem, this is how I fixed it, the white plastic lever that pushes the valve in I put a piece of plastic hose on the end of the lever where it touches the valve, that stopped any heat and also stopped the heater pipes getting hot(simple fix)

you still have a vacuum problem. check the main vacuum source. the problem with climate air is that everything is controlled from that very expensive (to replace) control panel

I had problems with my shut-off valve not activating the heater valve. Adjusted the rod so it was really pushing on the switch but it would only sometimes work usually if I pushed it a little harder. Just went a got a new shut-off valve from holden, part no: VS21066 called a "Switch - Vacuum". Cost me $20. Only one screw holding it in, two vacuum hoses on it. Took about 5 minutes to swap, just in an awkward spot. Old one was black, new one is white.

Had a look at the old one, there is a spring inside with a seat that slides. The switch itself moved freely and the spring worked ok, so I assume it was the seat not sealing properly. Could try lubricating but that might cause leaks or dirt to sit in the lubricant and cause problems later on. New one went in and shes good as new, pipes no longer hot. Just remember though that the coolant wont circulate fully, so switch it off cold every now and again to flush it out.
