    Default Timing Belt/Water Pump Cost/Place?

    Hey guys,

Thinking my 96 VS Wagon needs a timing belt soon, its on 203,000kms :P

Do they normally replace the water pump with it? What other things usually get replace with the timing belt?

Also anyone know what costs i'll be looking at or have any recommended repairers in the Brisbane area?

Hope it ain't too much, as the vehicle itself is not worth too much now.

    Thanks

The VS has a timing chain not a belt. If you are referring to the accessory belt, the one you can see, then it will need replacing when it is worn or if the tensioner has gone past the mark that tells you it is stretched.

Usually the water pump is not replaced when the belt is done, or even if the chain is done. The chain is not a serviceable item, IE needs replacing at a certain interval, it needs replacing when it is stuffed basically.

Oh, I was told it has a timing belt, and that it will go very soon.

If it is the accessory drive belt, it's literally a 30 second job to do. Even if you have very little mechanical ability. About $30 for the belt. You do need a 18mm ring spanner but the wheel brace, which is 19mm, can be used. The only potential difficulty is in determining the route of the belt.

Hey, yah, nah its not the accessory belt, that seems to have some life still left according to the markings.

    Thanks for the info guys!

I wouldn't trust the markings, I have bought new acc belt and the marking shows stretched.

Best way is to look at the actual belt and see if there is any large cracks.

i think you got the wrong belt than there are about 5 belts for the ecotec's (from vs to vy)and about 3 for the the old 3.8
