my vr bt1 5ltre does that aswell. got new radiator, and had the system flushed. in warm weather in traffic with the aircon on it sits just below half on the temp guage, in really hot weather it goes to half and sometime just above. from what i've been told it's normal. v8's don't like hot weather.

also make sure your thermo fan is coming on when you turn the ac on, mine wasn't and would always shoot str8 up to half way before the thermo fan came on. now it comes on as soon as the ac is turned on and keeps things under control.

engines will produce more heat under load ie hill driving ,a/c on..

all you can do is improve your cooling system

not sure if you have to bleed air from the system like v6s,but if you do it might be causing the overheating ,my vs supercharged 6 statesman had this promblem even though every thing was replaced ,but once I relised the previous owner never bled the air out of the system and done it I have never had a promblem

yeah au thermos will cool the motor more and also take strain of the motor as they are run by the battery not the motor like the clutch fan

Before you go to the expense and installation of any thermo fan on a 5L, check the V8 Development and Modification threads. This subject has been covered in detail and todate, nobody who has fitted thermo fans [AU or otherwise] can swear on a stack of bibles, that on a hot day, when the outside temperature is 30+, with aircon on, they are better or even come close to the mechanical clutch unit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against electric fans, and ready to do the conversion if the AU electric fans can keep the V8 cool under these conditions. Until convinced otherwise, stick to the mechanical fan as it does the job admirably.

BTW, check that you don't have blown head gaskets by doing a radiator pressure test as well.

    cheers.

when your sitting in traffic at idle the clutch fan is turning slowly so won't cool real well.
One of the best things about electric fans is that they run flat out even when the engine is idling, so work better in traffic.
