this is just a warning, some of you more experiansed guys will allready know this but some inexperianced/new members might not, i found this out last weekend (didnt have time to post untill now)
there is no drainage plug on the transmission sump (on the vs anyway, maby others, i dont know)
it took myself and my nabour a few hours to discover this, in the end we called his mate whos a trans specialist whos answer was "they dont have one"
so if your topping up the trans take it slow and get it right, cuz theres no way to drain it, other than to take the sump off
bit of a stupid thing havin no plug but its all good
so now you know, it wont take you 4 and a half hours to top up the trans and try find the sump plug![]()
There's no drain plug on any 4L60 variants that I know of. Easiest way to drain some out is to loosen half a dozen bolts and let it bleed out the side. Not hard![]()

its prob no suprise to you im still learning about cars lol
if id knowen that way it woulda made it a lot easyr hahaha
thanks bro your a legend!!
haha yeah, some things shock you when you first find out. I tell you what, if those sumps had a damn drain bolt in the side of them, I'd have swallowed a few quarts less trans fluid in my timeI remember the first time I did a trans service, I didn't get a drain pan even CLOSE to large enough.
The stuff was coming out all sides of the goddamned sump pan, and I was using my arms/elbows/face/neck to catch stray oil and filter it down into the pan to avoid making a mess on the groundGood thing used trans oil smells delicious. I love getting it all over me. I have a shirt that I use for trans services - washed it so many times, I still can't get the smell out. I absolutely love it

sounds like my oil change shirt, i love it when you pull out the dip stick and see that beautiful golden liqued, i use my shirt to wipe the dipstick off for the sole reason of showing off the clean oil in my engine hahahaha
Hahaha, I've destroyed many a pair of perfectly good jeans by using them as cleaning rags![]()

what ever you dont use your girls fav pajamas to clean the car, they may look raged and be older than she is and look like thed do a good clean but trust me the aftermath is not worth it!
Nah, get your priorities straight! If you need cleaning rags, you need cleaning rags! There's no two ways about it. Take what you need
My last girlfriend wanted me to choose between the car and her. I don't need to tell you which one I picked![]()

hahahaha same thing id pick!!!
the car!
far more fun to play with, and less needy lol
another good way to drain some fluid is to undo the hoses and drain your trans cooler. that gets about 0.4L out which should be enough if you have put a tad extra in it
I believe it is the top hose that pumps out and the lower hose is the return? correct me PLEASE! if i'm wrong as I get mixed up very easily :P
if you have put way too much in you can stick the hose into a bottle and start the car for a second or two, that should pump a lot out no worries.
thats how i do it. i pump out about 3 liters and then fill almost the same amount back and then check and do the final top up when hot.
you can get drain plugs fitted if your desperate. if i was building a killer trans i'd also fit a aftermarket finned alloy sump pan with drain plug already fitted and holds an extra liter of fluid.

drain plug on the vs series 3 utes :P
Yep, on a VN-VP (and I'm pretty sure on a VS also) it's the top hose out of the radiator. If there's any doubt, slip an extra length of trans. hose over the free end of the pipe from the trans. and direct the (potential) flow from both of the hoses into the container. If there are extra hoses for an oil cooler you can figure it out from that.
It's a lot easier and only 5mins extra work - 4 X 10mm bolts + one electrical connector - to do it with the radiator fan removed.
The hoses are on the passenger end of the radiator.
It's best to have another person in the car to switch the ignition off when sufficient fluid has been pumped out.
Unfortunately, loosening the pan bolts to drain some fluid will mean that the pan gasket will never seal properly again, so don't go that route.
An alternative to pumping fluid out is to suck it out via the filler tube. There are suction pumps designed for this purpose available for purchase but they will be expensive for home use. Maybe something similar could be lashed up though...
When did I say which way the fluid flows ? Was just suugesting another method to drain a bit of fluid from the system. You need to undo both hoses from the cooler if you want to drain it without starting the engine.
Why cant you just use a standard hand pump with some hose on it, to pump the fluid back out the filler hole.
yea untill i heard about taking the hoses off to pump the fluid out i was planing on gettin a thin peice of pipe (maby irigation tubeing cuz thats thin) and my flatmates syphon kit/pump and just syphoning the fluid outa the filler hole, is it posible to do it this way?
cuz im still confuzed which hoses are for the trans, its certanly not the top pipe out of my radiator on the vs
The trans has two smaller hoses that run into the passenger side of the radiator. They should be down the middle of the side tank. Either that, or your car skips the radiator altogether, and has a dedicated trans cooler mounted in front of the aircon condensor, like my stato did. Either way, there should be two lengths of 5/16" high pressure hose running into something![]()
