Default Wheel Bearings Workshop around North Sydney

    Hi Guys,

I'm a new member here and a first time Holden owner. I have a VS Executive II with around 150Ks on the clock and the rear wheel bearings need replacing.

I've been quoted close to $700 by Lube Mobile. I was just wondering if this is a fair price and if there is anywhere in the North Sydney area that you can recommend.

A friend of mine is a long time Holden owner and I can see why he likes them. I'm hoping my experiences with them will be just as pleasurable.

    cheers

    richard

150K's is not much on those wheel bearings. Are you sure they are the problem ? Anyway get a quote from Reliable auto's in Artarmon. I hear they are reasonable.

yep, pretty sure. pulled the rear wheels off and could feel slight notchiness when truning the drive shaft, worse on the left.

is $700 reasonable for a bearing change?

I'm no expert but I've never heard of both rear wheel bearings to go at the same time and as greenacc says the mileage is low. The 'notchiness' you are feeling may well be normal especially if you have an independant rear suspension.
If the problem is both rear wheel bearings (see above) then $700 may well be a reasonable price for both sides.
I'd get a second opinion - the NRMA have mechanics you can trust so it may pay to contact them if you're a member.
Finally it's possible you may have misunderstood their description of the problem and it may be something slightly different (this is giving them the benefit of doubt). Good Luck.

i've worked with lots of things mechanical having done my apprenticeship many many years ago. I've even replaced the odd bearing or two, even wheel bearings! i've just not had a Holden before.

My VS does not have independent suspension. It has a live axle.

I just wanted an opinion of price and a good place to get bearings replaced as I don't have access to a bearing press and my tools at the moment. I don't need not a diagnosis of the problem, don't mean to sound snippy.

    cheers

$700 does sound a bit steep. I had both the wheel bearings done in my VS Berlina, albeit at different times, and it was around $270 each time. I did have IRS though, so that will mean a bit of a price difference. The actual bearings themselves were only about $60, but it was all the labour involved in pulling out the driveshafts etc and using the press. One of my bearings was that buggered that it literally broke out of the press and all the bearings scattered all over the workshop!

I'd definately recommend getting a second quote for your car.

yeah, i was told that some models of the VS had IRS but mine doesn't. Definitely cheaper to do the IRS ones as they can be done in situ (i'm told) but the live axles ones need the whole thing taken off and a press used.

thanks for confirming my thoughts re: price.

Not wanting to query your take on things but if you re-read the posts you will find that IRS is dearer to fix. The workshop manual says:

"As special tools are required to renew the rear hub bearings it is recommended that the suspension arm assembly be taken to an authorised dealer equiped with the tool required to perform the task."

Solid rear end should be cheaper.....but whether its worth the hassle to shop around.

    interesting...

the quote from Lube Mobile was much cheaper (when they thought my car had IRS) and nearly triple when they found out it was live axle.

anyway, i think we've established that $700 is a little expensive.
