Hey guys. Just been reading about c02 sensors here. I recently converted from a ford to a holden VS Caprice and man what a sweet ride.
Just the problem i find it drinks fuel like it is going out of fasion. Could it be my c02 sensor or the earthing to it . Need help from you guys as only found threads on v6 engines but sounds like the same prob. Cheers.......
Get it dyno'd and checked out. Could even be your timing is way out.
O2 sensors cause cars to drink fuel. So do worn out dizzy caps, rotor buttons, spark plugs, spark leads, old oil, blocked filters, low tyre pressures, broken cats, old sensors, and a whole lot of other small things all put together![]()

Yer im not that new to cars . The vs drives great. Goes hard , doesny ping or feel like the timing or that is out . Feels strong as an ox . Just that been reading threads on co2 sensors being badly earthed and that. Just wondering if anyone had similar problems that was all.
Morton so does low tyre pressure. Bad fuel, Old air filter and all that . As i said im not that new to engines. Anyways i will keep prying. Thanks
how many kms to a tank you get?
It is averagin around 20 litres to 100 km. Mate has a 5 litre vs clubby and gets **** loads better than that. Filled up 70 litres and seen around 400 out of the tank. As i said does not run hot and does not seem like the timing . Geez you guys are on it quick too. Thanks
Could be temp sensor too. It will cause bad fuel economy if its shagged. Its underneath the intake on the inlet manifold. Theres 2 there, 1 for the dash and 1 for the ecu. Its cheaper than the O2 sensor, so id try that first. Im not sure if the V8's have the O2 sensor issues like the V6's have. They might do im just not that sure though.
I'd be doing your plugs and filters too if you havnt already.
Mate, I got a stato, i get about 13-14 litres to the 100. and thats with abit of traffic on my way home and shortish trips to mates houses, and giving it abit on the od occasion.
As Morton said, tyre pressures etc.. make sure they are all up to the right pressure.
Do a full service, change everything thats needed to be changed, the leads, the plugs etc..
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
i would love 13-14 litres city traffic. Yer tyre pressures and all that good. I got brand spanking 40 series 18 inch rubber on it. I changed to a K&H filter and will prob do plugs n that also. Will try the temp sensor prob. I was just asking as maybe it is a common prob. I know could be injectors or a whole lot of crap . I hate fault finding but am good at it with any motor. Just asking as maybe there is a common fault with the 304 fuel injection. Thanks guys for helping out and i must say i love the 304 growl when ya unleash the beast............ Cheers
Ohhh yeah, the 304 sounds like no otherWhatever's causing the loss of economy, is probably drawing power too. Hopefully once you get it fixed, she'll have a few more ponies.
It's also possible that the last owner put a dodgy tune in there, or installed one of those cheap go-fast mods that just dumps fuel![]()

Well i will keep persisting and let you guys know of the outcome. Still looking for advice and some clues but yeah fark the thing sounds sweeet. The power feels strong and now im converted lets eat some blue ovals lol.
Ok just an update to my fuel economy woes....
Changed the plugs
Changed the leads
Changed the air filter to K&N
Reset the ecu
Now im seeing what i want. No way near 20 litres to 100 km. Now im seeing around 12.2 average which is a heck allot better than the 20 litres average before.
Did 3.78 litres to 30 km and that was lil thrashing, cruising and on the freeway.
So i feel allot better and hope this helps someone else as you guys helped me. Simple what i did but seems to have sorted it out...... Cheers
You stated you had reset the ECU how do you do this
Remove the "engine" fuse located in the engine bay fuse box for 30 secs (ignition on or off I `m not sure) or simply remove the negative cable from the battery for a minute * though beware it will run a bit like a pig for a while as it re-learns some things about your driving habits.
I thought was all ok but it slipped back to shit 20 litre to 100 km so i gave up Ok well after couple months and in the end giving up. I thought i should check the timing just incase the owner before me had no idea. Cut a long story short. it was at 4 degrees not 10 . So I reset it and thats the story. Thrash cuise on freeway and local streets and at 13 litre to 100 k average....... Lot better now
