Not sure what could cause foaming, definitely not normal though - when was the last time the car had a trans service?

Due about now. It`s got bubbles on the dip stick.
I haven`t added any fluid yet.

My understanding was that foaming was caused by an overfilled transmission. That said I have always seen bubbles on the dipstick since I bought mine (90000km). It had one transmission service at 90000km and another recently at 160000km and the service didn't change anything.

If this is a symptom of something I would like to know.

all above is correct but ill add something else. trans can foam the fluid for a couple of reasons one being coved bye over filling but the other can be due to low level of fluid. low fluid levels can cause air to get in to the system and cause cavatation of the fluid also cooler lines that have a small leak could be sucking air in to the lines as well. best solution would be to drain and refill.

also if you had low levels in the trans you would notice harsh shifting and slipping bands etc over fill would cause leaks if not addressed quickly.

the other one could be worn out fluid, as fluid ages the anti foaming agents could be just worn out just like engine oil etc. or has become contaminated from wearing transmission components etc

best advise is to do the trans service

I did a write up on how to do the service, if you or anybody reading this wanted to give it a read it's over here: DARKCOLD Tutorial: Changing the transmission fluid and filter on many Holden Commodore models (VS, VT, VX, VY) with the 4L60E Automatic Gearbox (could be helpful etc.)
