Yeah go ahead and stick some red or blue 'non' flashing lights on your roof, just tell the cops you havent taken your chrismas lights down yet when they pull you over.
Brakes are operated by the brake pedal, this isent. Tail lights are operated by the lights, but this isent a factory light. And if it was to be a fog light that need to be on a seperate switch to the lights
Anyway to the OP, i highly dout its legal.

I really dont see why this would be illegal. As long as the light is only showing from the rear of the vehicle, and is only on when the red lights at the back of the car are - why would it be a problem?
i couldent be bothered reading all the posts but who cares, some ricer prick is gunna have those blue leds on his window washer jet thingys, who cares if there illegal, its not like there flashing or multy colourd and becides, if you got the exaust tip from super cheap or repco etc they cant be illegal cuz there not allowd to sell anything thats illegal!!
i could be wrong ofcorse but im sick of those dirty rotten pigs getting in the way of what we want to do to our commodores, especialy when the ricers are doin worse!!
you dont turn a holden off

I think you would get away with it. The best way to check would be to call your states transport authority (I think yours would be Department of Transport - Contact us)
I know you cannot have red or blue lights on the front of the vehicle (I think thats what mischa was thinking of). Red lights on the rear of the car as brake lights I would treat as ok. Really whats the difference between the lights on the spoiler and the lights on the exhaust. If they were a clear distraction (flashing or whatever), probably not a good idea, but if they are just like any other brake light on the rear of the car I cant see the harm in it. But make some calls to get the answer from the people that make the decisions. Let us know if you find anything out.
I remember something about underbody neons, the only time they were illegal was if the globe is visible or if they are red..
And they can't be on while driving. No lights are allowed on outside the car beyond factory lights, extra headlights/fog lamps, or red lights facing the rear for brake lights. If the light is even visible from outside the car, in the case of insanely bright footwell neons perhaps, then you can also be fined/defected, not sure which.
I think you have to look at this logically. (This is in VIC, i don't know about other states)
Yes there are rules that say no red and blue parker lights because of 2 reasons.
Red at night look like tail lights... might confuse other people on the road.
Blue is a color reserved for emergency vehicles. Thus why its a no no... other than that, and lights facing forward cannot be any other color that white or normal yellow (excluding indicators). And any lights facing back cannot be a color other than red (excluding indicators, reversing lights and fog lamps.)
In regards to the comment about neons.
The law is they can't be blue or red... and light SOURCE cannot be visible but the glow can. They also need to be on a switch so you can turn them off. Thus why I had green underbody neons on a switch and only ever got pulled over for green parkers and tag lights. All the cops said about the neons was that one thought they look stupid (woman cop) and another copper actually pulled me over to to have a look, tell me he likes them and find out how i wired them in because his son wanted some.
Finally... you can add additional rear driving lights, brake lights and foglights to the front of your car as long as they meet the above regulations.
Thus why if your tip thing only turns on when your driving lights are on... that would classify as another driving light so i can't see any issues with it.
But this is my opinion, after interprating the regulations.
When it comes to issues or legality, best bet is to contact vicroads (as they make the rules and the police enforce them) and get a definate and straight answer. Otherwise you will get a million different answers on her ranging from "My mate said" to people plainly talking out their arse and that is not going to hold up them your explaining it to a cop.
Prefer an email, so you can print a hard copy and then you can keep it in the car incase you get trouble from the boys in blue for it!
Good luck mate.
Best bet I think would be to get rid of it or have it on a switch. Regardless of whether it's legal or not, a large percentage of police don't know the laws regarding car lighting. I've had completely opposite replies from different police regarding it before. If you get pulled over by a cop who THINKS it's illegal even if it's not, you're gonna have a lot of hassle to get fixed up.
Better to play it safe, ditch them and go without, or have them on a switch so you can choose when to have them on.
Pretty much spot on I reckon
Legal or not - if it's "outside the square", the fact is that you'll still get defected if the officer in question feels like it.... and no, there's nothing you can do about it. Plus you have to remember that having a red LED exhaust tip will only bring you more attention from the boys in blue - which makes you more likely to get pulled up (... and hence, defected)
The only question is - are you willing to take the risk and run the gauntlet?
am I the only oe wondering how those LEDS are going to stand up to the heat?
Good point... I saw LightingVP has some green ones on his, seems to be that it wraps around the zorst and sits between two sheets of metal. The LEDs themselves don't run hot, perhaps whatever mounting material they use isn't a very good heat conductor? Or it'll just die fairly quickly![]()
on the subject of regs etc, when i was investigating the merits of a pod filter (there are none lol) i rang regency; they look at the cars when gettin them off bad defects etc, they said pods are completly legal no qn about it. rang local cop shop and spoke to some traffic tosser who said they are ****e and non-complient etc, so even if it is legal, like stressball said, cops will do what they feel like (u know the grumpy ones dont get any at home :P)
You carry some tools with you and if you end up getting hassled for it, tell the cops you will take it off straight away, and you might get off without a fine.
A few years ago when I had a VL commodore, the tow ball was obstructing the number plate. I was warned about it 2 times and was let off with an official warning. Then 1 night this copper said he was going to fine me for it, I opened the boot and said that I will remove it straight away. The cop put his book away and I got no fine. When I got home, I put the tow ball back on again![]()
