    Default VS Auto trans problem

    Gidday all,

I've got an issue with my auto transmission in my VS. I think it is dead and will need to be replaced, but...

It only gives me 1st and 3rd gear, no reverse. I'm thinking maybe something is seriously wrong with 1st gear as it makes a horrible grinding noise, rather than anything else being kaput.

The box let go driving down the hume highway just north of the picton road turn off, and i drove it in third for about 15 km until i stopped at wilton. It runs fine in third gear, smooth and good, but the grinding noise and slippage (kind of like when the clutch is slipping in a manual) in first gear makes me think that may be the problem.

Is losing 2nd, 4th and reverse 'limp home mode'? or have i lost the box?

    Cheers!

    P

The trans has a broken sun gear - the only fix is a new sun gear etc ($850 min) or a full reco ($1700-2000). The parts to fix are cheap but its the labour costs are what make it expensive. This is a very common problem with Commodore 4L60E transmissions.

pretty dear to get her fixed, i'm up for a new case as well... 1100 bucks should get me back on the road.

transmission bloke said he spent all of last week doing the same job in a number of commodores, a spline thingo breaking off a large bucket shaped steel thing.

    anyway... got it sorted

Think its actually the 'sun shell' that breaks - its part of the epicyclic gears - they replace it with an aftermarket one which is much stronger.
