Hey guys, just wanting to replace my stocko exhaust on my commodore VS with a sports exhaust from the cat, got told I dont need the cat replaced unless its screwed as Im looking more for the sound not performance. So what I was looking at was a 2.5" sports exhaust from the cat with muffler, and I thought I would go Redback. I quoted a price here in Hervey Bay for $290 fitted and then a $30 stainless steel exhaust tip. My friends thought this was a little pricey and for that price I should be getting the cat with the sports system, just wanted some other opinions on the subject. Is this a little expensive or about right? I dont know much about exhausts so the guy might have bumped the price up since he might of twigged that I didnt know **** about exhausts lol. Got told about baffles from my friends as well they said dont get em. WTF are they lol? Looked into 3" but got told it would have to go over my dif and it would knock it all the time plus you lose compression in a larger exhaust. And I dont want extractors just the half exhaust thing, anyways the wisdom of JC's is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys.![]()
Redback is a good brand, a lot of people use them. Don't worry about replacing the cat with a high flow type unless you want a little bit more performance. I think by baffles your friends are referring to the type of muffler, regular mufflers have baffles, you want a "straight-through" muffler which has better flow.
I also don't think exhaust diameter affects compression, as it does back-pressure. 2.5" is fine for you.
Thanks for the reply, but the real question I had was is the price of $320 about right for a sports exhaust with a stainless steel tip?
Does that include the muffler?
Yeah pipe from cat to muffler and from muffler to the end with the tip. got told to go for a straight through muffler as well.
Mate, I JUST today got (from the cat back) a new exhaust set up. I have a Holden VS Acclaim Series II 1996 model. I got a lukey muffle and resinator with a dumper off the end. Got mine for $335 and that's everthing including the dumper. Makes a Huge difference to sound man, you get heads turning. If it's a nice sounding car you want, go for it. Alternatively go all out and get the whole system done with extractors
... But that's a hell lot more expensive :|
the price is around average.. if u do a ring around, quoting the same system to all u ring, u should come up with around the same figure +/- $50-100
pending brand of extractors if u want them, they range from $400-800.. some come with the Y piece but most dont, so just beware
Yeah thanks guys im not after extractors, just the sports exhaust from the cat back (keeping the stocko cat back), more after the better sound than the performance. SO the 320 mark is about right? I take it get a straight through muffler? and whats the go with resonators? Do I get one? I am after a nice sound not a really loud sound. I dont want to draw attention to myself ok haha.
if you can pay a bit extra and get a glass pack muffler as your first muffler, and either no rear resi, or a hotdog.
glass pack gives you a nice deep throaty sound generally without the drone.
If you don't want to draw attention to yourself, DEFINITELY get a resonator. With my system, I got a resonator in it and I'm sure I draw attention even with it on. Not too good being a P plater and all. I was talking to the exhaust specialist that did my set up. Without a resonator, you get a constant loud sound which if taken on the highway can get "droney" (if you will). With a resonator, you get a great sound + it mellows out while "cruising" (in a sense). That's the best I can put it. But on top of that, my V6 sounds friggen awesome now
.
have a look on ebay, you can get a redback system for $179 plus postage which wouldnt be much coz the guy who sells them is in brisbane, then just bolt it up yourself. grab a chrome tip from autobarn and it will come in a whole lot less than $300![]()
hey i got my exhaust from Hervey bay ( i live in maryborough) as it was way cheaper then here) i got a 2.5 inch red back system with the 2 mufflers (front and rear resi) there straight through mufflers/resi red back system sounds good and cost me 270 supplied (i installed it) so 320 installed and with a tip sounds good (thats if it has the rear resi as well)
i think it was only like 210 for the single muffler (no resi) set up when i was getting prices (about 3-4 months ago)
but for the muffler and resi system (that i have) here in maryborough for the same was anywhere from $350-450 for the exact same dam thing trip to the bay is like 15 bucks in fuel lol still worked out way cheaper
Yeha your getting the same price for two mufflers i got quoted at 320 installed with tip with only on muffler...... Hence it should prolly only be 240ish with one muffler and the tip? Anyways im going to check some other exhaust places today. Ill have some more prices after today.
Lol I just went to the place that you got yours done at on main street, and they quoted me at $350 plus the exhaust tip, so like $370 all up. Thats for the redback sports exhasut with one muffler. Wtf did all the prices go up? Coz the other place can do it for $310 but I thought that was expensive lol? Both of em are straight through mufflers. I guess 310 is about as cheap as Ill find, becuase I dont want to buy one and try and do it myself I aint that handy lol.
dosnt matter if you aint handy coz it aint hard
My mate got his redback brand new for around $150, he then bought a tip for around $80
Total cost $230, it helps though that we supply some of the paint that redbacks are painted with.
dam! i didnt think the prices would go that much up:my:...like i said wasn't too long ago as i have only had the car for 4 months. going buy the prices now id say go with the $310 price (obviously). Where can you get it done for $310?.
as for installing it ...red back system i got bolted straight up without any dramas...took only 20 min on and off. If you have basic knowledge of what a spanner does then you can install the exhaust:P
you "can" fit the tip with a clamp, but otherwise you really only need to spot weld the tip on, with enough force it will push over the exhaust pipe, then a couple of quick spot wleds and it's done.
Yeh thats what I thought but even so I would need to get the car up on hoists to get underneath to attach the exhaust, however simple it is I dont have anyway of raising the car up on hoists. So there is really no other option for my then have it professionally installed.
Yeah ok so $310 is probably the best price I can get it at, I will have a think as whether its worht the money or not. Thanks for all the information guys you have bee super helpful, as JC's always is lol.
Ummm ive been on youtube listening to some VS exhaust videos and some of the ones with just the system I want sound pretty average.... Am I better to go with the extra hotdog muffler between the muffler and the exhaust tip? Does it normally cost much extra? Will is improve the sound? Is it worth it? I say this because I heard and exhaust with two hotdogs and it sounded pretty sweet. K thanx for your opinions again.
