I found a cheap (well cheapish) VT brake upgrade for my VS, and i know there have been questions about them before, but I just want to know for certain - Is there anything illegal or unsafe about using the shims that come with the kits?
I have no problems with the extra work involved with installing VT brakes over slotted VS/good pads, but I just want to make sure it is 100% safe and legal

Just done mine on my V8, sloppy pedal due to ABS, so a standard set up would help a bit, there are shimless rotors around now so have a hunt, as for legal well it`s an upgrade to a safer stopping power so if its done correctly then legal it should be.
legally it needs an engineers certificate, but havent heard of anyone getting done for it. this link will come in handy
VT booster and master cylinder into a VN

I was under the impression that in the VS the master cylinder wouldn't need replacing? Or is that just people saying that you can get away without upgrading it, but it is really best to.
I want to do this properly the first time, so should I put in a VT booster and cylinder as well?
EDIT: If it does need a booster/master cylinder as well maybe I will just go with standard calipers and slotted rotors with good pads. I had these on my old VS and it stopped well, and felt good in the pedal

Using the VS master is fine but if your pedal height is still a bit low for your liking then you can fit a VT master if you use a spacer between the master and booster.
Racebrakes in Sydney sell them.
I use the VS master and spacer rings with my VX HSV 330mm fronts, brakes are great.

yeah, the master is optional, but there have been several threads where people have said their VS master carked it soon after doing the VT upgrade due to longer pedal travel from the larger callipers. Its easy to add a VT master later if you need to.
Hmm...pedal feel is a major factor for me. I'll just get the kit and start looking out for a master cylinder, then if it feels soft as shit I'll just whack that on

I have the spacer rings on my brakes > No problems with them!
I installed the complete front VT brakes/ rotors, VT master cyl and booster. All quite easy to do mate.
These are the trickiest parts that you will come across:
- unbolt the booster mounting bracket (off the rear of the VS booster) and redrill holes to fit it to the VT booster
- Take the reservoir cup off the VS master and fit it to the VT master (redrill the locking bolt hole)
- Redrill the VT booster pushrod hole distance so that it matches up to the same height as the pushrod on the VS booster.
You will love the braking performance! good luck

so i just need to redrill holes, not make a new bracket? will this be the same as a VR booster?

Vr booster needs more mods than that stocky. Its the same mods as the link you posted above, not a big job at all if you have the right size holesaw
I have also had my certified by an engineer and rubber stamped by the rta. You have to, otherwise you basically void your insurance as it gives them a loop hole to not pay you.
But maybe buying a VS bracket might be the go by the sounds of it.
