Hi guys, I know there are a few threads already about this but i couldn't find any that answer my question. My mate is thinking about lowering his VR and he doesn't have the money to buy lowered springs just yet so he wants to cut them just for now. He wants to know if there is any danger with driving a car with cut springs? Also how he can make his ride smoother cause he knows that cutting springs doesn't give you the best ride.
Cheers!
you gunna get told dont be stupid, just buy the springs.
haha im not doing it its for a mate lol. Yeah i am expecting that, i would just like to hear from someone who has cut springs in there car, if there is any lol.
there are plenty of threads.
Tip, cutting them gives them a higher chance of falling out
so you haven't taken any notice of the rants from 99.9% of members that are against cutting springs?Hi guys, I know there are a few threads already about this
Fair enough if he wants to cut them and kill himself if something goes wrong, but would you want to be a passenger when he crashes?
Best advise I can give is to tell him to start saving and once he has enough to afford the new setup, not only will his car handle better and look good, it will be safer for him and all others on the road..
Yeah alright i am sure he will wait a bit until he saves up for some springs, i'll just tell him about all the things that will go wrong and it will scare him lol.
Where is the cheapest place to get a set of ultra lows? Which brand makes the lowest spring, Kings, Dobinson, Pedders etc?
I cut my springs just for the time being to feel what it's like. 2.5 coils at the back and 2 coils at the front. the ride is absolutely terrible but it handles better. I just did it for shits and giggles but I'm in the process of purchasing king springs with Monroe GT shocks.
My car audio:
CD tuner: Alpine CDA-9884E with Ipod interface
Front speakers: Alpine Type R SPR-17S 6.5 component speakers, powered by a avant-garde 23dxi 2 channel amplifier - 2x51 watt RMS
Rear speakers: pioneer coaxials connected to tuner
Subwoofer: Alpine Type R SWR-1222D 12" 2 ohm dual voice coil 500 watts RMS powered by a response precision 2x150 watts RMS 2 channel amp bridged to 500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms
Yeah i have been in my other mates VS with cut springs on 17" Calais internationals and low profile tyres and i must say after a sorta long trip with 5 in the car and i boot full of stuff i thought my back was out, we got defected aswell that day for being to low.

Hahah yeah well we didn't know the springs were cut cause he bought it from a dealership with a roady so we just assumed it was lowered properly. He doesn't know much about cars he just saw that it looked good so he bought it lol. Also got defected cause the exhaust was too loud but we thought it was alright cause he bought it like that and it had a roady, he didnt touch it after he bought it so yeah.
well i'd only cut the rears...and so long as u do go jumping the car there shouldnt be a drama..my vk is pretty low (tucks 18s easy). the previous owner cut stock vn springs and took the pedders out..but he gave me some super low kings instead which i wont be sticking in it looks to good when its low, but the ride isint too bad considering some of my mates (previous owner of the vk) cars...like his vn clubby...now that was bumpy. he cut about 2 coils off some pedders springs. but yea..i'd just cut the rears..never the front unless i wanted it a tiny bit lower but not like 2 coils, maybe like a half.
yeh i cut my rear springs in my old vl and it was the worst ****ing ride ever so ****ing rough and bumpy.best option mate buy new springs.better and safer.
Ok thanks for the input guys. What about compressing stock springs? Or is that just as bad and dangerous as cutting them.
Cheers
has anyone thought about the fact that VR springs are tapered ? and the non irs VP and VN VL and so forth were just straight ? i'm pretty certain all VR's have tapered springs in the rear which makes cutting them fairly dangerous considering the coils get larger so the bump stops wont sit in properly. compressing and re-seating the springs i dont know much about that
No i didn't realise that they were tapered, thanks for letting me know.
only IRS springs have the taper.....live axle springs are the same diameter from top to bottom
yeap, mine are the same thickness on front and back (vr live axle)
didn't actually know there were live axle VR's lol.
pretty sure IRS was just an option on vrs??
Will compressing the springs be a bit safer than cutting them? Or will they still fall out?

just tell ur mate to stop stinging and do it properly![]()
So your mate had the money to get 19's but he doesn't have the money to get proper springs?
Tell him to get his priorities right.
I'm going to be really tame in my response to this thread because if i speak my mine, its not going to be pretty.
Do it properly now... of you will regret it down the track.
And before asking a "Whats the worst that can happen question?" the answer is "He kills somebody"
Might not happen, alow of idiots drive around with cut springs.
What gives him the right to decide that its 'ok' to put other orad users around him in danger.
Finally... maybe the fact it will damage other components in his car will get through to him.
The spring seats have a tendacy to damage when using cut springs because they don't sit properly.
Also a spring is designed to work properly with the number of coils its made with.
Cut some off and it won't actually work properly.
Over bumps there will be more stress on the axle, chassis, bump stops and shock absorbers.
So... in a nutshell...
If your mate has a metal capacity GREATER than a crushed peanut... then he would just buy lower springs... its about 100 buck for a pair depending how hard you look.
And if thats not low enough... you can get drop in airbags for 700... and you can pump them up and down at a servo... no compressor needed.
Cheers
His car came with 19's and he spent all his money on that so he is flat broke lol. Yeah i know where you are coming from mate. I'll show him this thread later on today and i am sure he will get scared and wait lol. I will make sure he doesn't go cutting his springs (he'll need my help anyway). I'll see if we can get a deal on 2 sets of Ultra Lows, one set for his car and one set for mine, might get it cheaper that way.
Cheers!
