my '95 VS commodore has a knocking noise coming from the rear left wheel or brake. its not always there it just starts when it wants to. going over bumps doesnt affect it or anything. went to mechanic and asked if it could be bearings. he said no because it would make a grinding noise continuously so he said it could be a loose hand brake sping on the back wheel knocking on the brake rotor. does this sound like a possible explanation or is this guy clueless? i will have to get it up on a hoist to be 100% sure but dont have the $$$ this week.
Have you had any work done to it recently?.Could be a stuffed shock or the springs not sitting in properly, could even be the brake pads arent sitting in properly.
had the same problem and it had turned out that the handbrake spring had come out and was grinding away the insides, it wasnt a constant noise but it would come and go
so if u just jack it up remove the wheel and take off the caliper then pull the disk off you will see what it is
Sounds like the hand brake . . Maybe a brake shoe is worn out , could be the spring aswell. . Only way to find out really is jack the car up and take the wheel off and remove the disc and have a good look . .

couldnt be the brake shoe unless he is driving with the handbrake on.....
the spring holds them together then there are two funny clips which holds them onto the housing.. it will be one of these
no im not driving with the handbrake on so thats not the problem. ill jack it up tommorow and have a look. would it be hard to fix myself if it is the handbrake shoes or should i take it to the mechanic and let him fix it? i dont really want to spend money on things i can fix myself.
As VH_sle_81 has said its most probably the spring. Should be easy to fix . Just a matter of pulling of that disc and inspecting

the spring and retainers are really easy to replace though it helps losening off the handbrake but not needed just use pliers, parts should cost you under 5 bucks if u replace the lot not including shoes
I have a similar problem but mine is related to backlash from the LSD on its way outMine started to make a clunk sound from the drivers rear and would only do it on the odd occasion & I also thought it was a brake caliper ect, so i put it up on the hoist to check it out and i also checked the diff cradle mounts but all was good on that side of things ect so the best way i found to test the noise was to go into a big vacant car park put it back into 1st and drive around slowly and then tap the acc back and forth sharply (don't chirp the tyres or nothing just a few quick jabs) then return to slow driving! By doing this i could usually hear the clunking sound again ect! I should also point out that my car is well looked after and i don't do burn outs & neither did the previous 2 owners but imo the holden LSD diffs are weak as ......!
