Hey guys. I've seen a few threads on here about Ecotecs pinging but they all seem to say different things.
Mine pings only at certain times, usually after coasting up a hill when you start accelerating again lightly, it pings for about 2 seconds.
Is this normal ? If not, what should i do? Its nothing to do with fuel filter , plugs, injectors .... its been doing this for last 6 years ( since i bought it ) and i've changed the plugs and stuff a few times since then. Thanks.
Had this same problem with mine this time last year.
After doing all of the normal things, i brought it up on here and the guys very accurately pointed me in the direction of my memcal. Basically, take the left hand side kick panel off, below the glovebox so you can access the computer, take the computer out, turn it over, remove the metal protecting the memcal. If it says "BSTK1451" on the chip, you've got a problem ECU which causes the ecotec to ping under part throttle. See this thread for my particular problem:
Pinging under part throttle
get in touch with dr bob, he was very helpful.
Hope this helps, let us know.
Some of them ping really easily and some can take heaps of timing, If anyone knows why some of them are so ping happy I'd really like to knowbecause the variation is quite ridiculous. I beleive it's got to be a fault with the fuel or ignition somewhere but no one seems to ever cure it?
true that. we did the same to a mates VS that was pinging and it barely made it better. we put in colder spark plugs and it stopped, but it wasn't worth the power drop. Some of them ping really easily and some can take heaps of timing, If anyone knows why some of them are so ping happy I'd really like to know because the variation is quite ridiculous.
