Default Trying to fit a new Headunit into VR1 + other hiccups

Firstly i'll say gday just got my grandparent's old VR wagon pretty much immaculate with 119k on the clock

I picked up a Pioneer DEH-P6050UB headunit and GM-6300F amp from JB hifi the other day .

I managed to pull all the console and everything out ok, no problems there, but once it came to fitting the new headunit i had a lot of trouble. It seems to be about an inch or so longer than the stock head-unit and as a result the cabling at the back was getting crushed . I wasn't able to fit RCA plugs behind there at all. I also noticed that the headunit harness doesn't have a Remote wire on it (even though the manual says it does) so it looks as though i'll have to find which pin is the remote and forge a wire into the harness, or connect the amplifier (480W max = ~340W rms) to the ignition power.

I already had to drill new holes in the stock headunit brackets so the unit sat *reasonably* well, but for a good job, and to bring the unit forward so cables can access the back, looks like i'm going to have to fabricate my own brackets. Has anyone had problems like these before?

    Cheers,
    Jarrad

hey dude i just finished putting back my dash the other day to the head unit i bawt a pioneer from brighton jb spend $1,200 on sound sytem my head unit is the same but wat iv done is as iv put slided the head unit in once the whole dash is back on i pushd the wires underneath the head unit in the gap and it all fit once it was in it just sits there but then i have a 2cm gap above the pioneer head unit and iv jarrd it in with a bit of plastic so it all fits nicely!

And yes i have had a problem thers no ***n bracket that comes with the pioneer head units i took the one off from the eurovox and put it on the pioneer and it fits well but with only one screw holding it!

And with the remote control wire the VR doesnt have a remote control wire in the eurovox head unit so im buggerd which wire it is!!!??

Got one question for u aswell i wired up the acc and battery to the battery cord in the car how have u done the ACC cord what have u wired up the pioneer acc cord too cus my radio turns on when the car is off and has no key in it im curious where i wire it so i can only turn it on when the car has a key in the acc! What wire is it bud??

    Cheers mate,

i have had slightly the same problem with my vr.

i just used the factory brackets and jammed it in there. and mine has heaps of things connected. i have the wiring harness , usb lead, 3 sets of rca's, aerial, audio jack.

but mine way be different because i have the climate control box. which may be smaller.

i think i have heard of people heating up the box behind the headunit and bending it a bit to make everything fit in properly

good luck with it anyway mate

looks as though i'm going to have to make my own brackets and possibly try heating up the plastic as you say. Mine has usb, aerial, aux, wiring harness and rca's all at the back

I got a wiring harness to connect to the factory plug from supercheap which i soldered to the head-unit loom and it runs perfectly. Just make sure you have the right coloured wires connected, i was a bit confused myself.

If you dont have a remote wire as part of your harness you can just connect the remote wire from the amp directly to a switched power source at the back of one of your fuses, i.e something from accessories like the cigarette lighter so if it does blow its nothing too important that goes out. This will work fine though the only downside is that your amp will always be on when the car is on (which probably wont matter most of the time anyway).
Also, with the problem of the new head unit being longer you can always drill new holes in the side of the head unit or the original brackets to bring it a bit further out of its hole. Careful with the drill if you do this though as id imagine this would void any warranty.

just fitted a kenwood to my daughters vr, too easy. took the brackets off the old radio and just drilled new holes to fit the kenwood. got a supercheap adaptor for the vr and soldered it together.got the rca leads for the sub with 90 degree plugs so it doesnt stick out too far, fitted in perfect. looks better than original. it has an accessory power out delay wire so it was easy to connect the amp. sometimes you need a capacitor on the power in to stop the pop sounds.if you were close to me id give you a hand , im near wyong nsw.

Right angled RCA leads too, the connector comes off on a right angle to stop the RCAs getting crushed.

Just make you're own 90 degree brackets, have the HU sticking out a bit, although i've never had that problem in my VS, i've gone through 10+ head units in my car and never had the problem or crushing wires and all that, although i did make my own brackets and sometimes the HU did stick out a little bit.

just get 2 strips of metal, drill two holes in each according to where you want the HU to sit.
