How can you normally tell if the front wheel hubs are shot if theres no bearing noise?.Is there a way of checking with the car jacked up?.Or will there be a shake in the steering?.
I would think that grabbing the wheel by the top and bottom (when jacked up) and wiggling it back and forth would reveal any play in the bearingsI know the VR/VS bearings are a little different in setup (they're one part in the hub thingo) but I can only imagine this test should reaveal any play in them.

If they have excessive play in them you will get grinding on corners - another test is to remove the front wheel, push the brake pads clear of the brake disc and rotate by hand the hub .... any roughness can indicate a failed bearing. The workshop manual details measuring sideplay using a dial gauge and a spring gauge but thats a bit complicated for the normal owner.
They normally are very reliable - I mistakenly replaced both front hubs (@$350 each!) and both front discs trying to fix a grinding noise on corners which ended up being caused by poor quality steel radials.
I don't like VS hubs anymore.. Not since 3 of the studs on one of mine sheared through coz the nuts were overtightenedQuite a sight, actually seeing your front right wheel rolling along beside the car at 90kmh.
Never said I was blaming the hub.
