Question Dropping Level 3 Cluster into unready Level 2 ready VS

    Sup everyone,

My cluster is pretty much ruined (level 2) and I need to get a replacement, figure I'd go a bit extra and get a level 3 cluster. I know there's a lot of rewiring to be done and half the loom from a level 3 car is required for full functionality, but if I were to just rip the old level 2 cluster out and put a level 3 cluster straight in without touching a thing what sort of functionality would work, if any?

I guess the odometer probably wouldn't work but how about the basic functions like speedo, rev tacho, temperature and fuel tank?

Or are the connections at the back different?

Also do I need a V6 cluster or can I use parts from the level 2 cluster to rebuild a level 3 cluster which can work with a v6 (sorry I'm not familiar with how the clusters work).

Eventually I guess I'd get the other functions to work like trip computer and the rest of the loom if basic functionality was available with a straight swap, if not then I'll just get another level 2.

    Thanks all

    Default Go for it!

    Hi,

Step 1 is to get an L3 cluster for the right engine, as the tacho is engine specific. I might add that a V8 cluster tacho can be modified to V6 or the reverse, but it is better to get the right one first up.

Other than that, the instruments will work out of the box. It is only the trip computer that requires new wiring, and the trip computer buttons. I expect that the odometer will still work, but am not 100% sure.

Completing the full mod eventually would be worth the effort.

    Cheers.

odo wont work until the loom is replaced. You will need to wire in parts of a L3 loom to get the odo to work. As for air bags - if you have them - this maybe an issue for you also.

There is a thread on this forum on how to do the wiring and remove the loom without taking the whole dash out.

As moffman said, all your gauges will work without problems.

Keep in mind running it this way is illegal as you don't have a working odometer.

I wouldn't want to go without the odometer besides the legal implications because I like the car to be serviced at the correct KM, but thanks for the information guys... I might go through with the swap because it's awesome though if I did I might need to be without odo until I can source the loom... but I think my cluster might be OK, just the speed sensor (if there is such a thing) might be broken... I'll make a new thread about that issue

Thanks again guys, rep+ to all
