As stated i'm just wondering how much oil is too much..mines around 5-7mm above the full mark and just wondering if i should leave it be (as i don't really want to get under the car again) or is it something that i should be rectifying immediately? cheers
NAH won't matter at all. Won't hurt and won't do any damage
I would get under the car and rectify it asap![]()
Yep, don't ever fill above full as some cranks use a particular level of oil to throw oil up into the block. By having it too full it won't throw oil up. It has a 'max' for a reason... best to fix it unfortunately.

the distance from full to the "top up" mark on the stick is about one litre, so use that as a reference and think about the above post.
this reminds me about when my cousing called saying she filled her barina up with oil. till it was full..
and she said she started it and it was making funny noises.
after a few questions i found out she had filled it up to the filler hole. using almost a whole 5 litre drum and it still had enough oil she just opened the cap and went ahh there is no oil ..
thats women for ya.
but yeah your better off draining it and putting the right amount in just to be safe
Too much oil can be just as bad as no oil, defiantly drain some out to reach the correct level.
appreciate the help guys..i'm assuming the easiest way to fix this is by emptying out the filter? please correct me if there is an easier way
undo the sump plug minimally and it should let some out, or undo it and hold the plug against the hole and let some out that way.
Just DONT do it when the engines HOT![]()
mate who had a VS when new said the dealer told him to always fill it 5mm above the full mark ... ? said it helps for something. anyone else heard that ?
do you do that GreenAcc?
if you do that and have never had any issues, then i'd start doing it too :P
Think about it......how would a dealer know more than the manufacturer that has their reputation on the line. Any dealership found to be issuing information which contradicts official GMH servicing directives would soon find they are no longer a GMH dealership. My opinion only.
whenever i do an oil change i just chuck the whole 5 litres in engine just burns off the rest of the shit it dont need..

The 'Full' mark on the dipstick for my VR is not accurate. I measure the oil by volume and ignore the level on the dipstick as the amount it should have. 4.1 litres of oil takes it to about 8 mm above the full mark.
haha.. it only goes the tinnyest bit above the full mark. so its not worth keeping the remaining couple of ml's..
and really who gives a shit when you can get another engine for under 500 bucks.
thats with my dipstick anyway. so thats probably why i get a wrong reading.. but who knows
i guess your right with that.
but i just looked on the dipstick and kept putting the oil in till it said full. then there was a couple hundred ml left over..
anyone with any info on what a bit of extra oil would do to the engine being either an ecotec or a buick. would it stuff the oil pump or something else?
To much oil can damage seals and turn the oil to foam by aeration from the crankshaft causing insufficient lubrication of engine parts.
Some people should not be allowed to work on cars.
I've allways filled mine at oil changes to the middle right between add and full, I figure there's no use wasting more oil than you need. This way I have more clean oil left over for later
vr 93 to 95 uses 4.1 L with filter
vs 95 to 97 uses 4.3 L with filter
vs series 3 ute 98 till 00 uses 4.8 with filter
and mine has allways been over full bye about 1/2 L it aslo has that much nurlon stuff put through it too so meah......needs a service now i think of it

Yes, at least sort of. The oil level (and dipstick and dipstick tube to reflect that) in V6 was revised during VS production - with no other changes. It was also done as a rework on some cars. If you had/have an early car with the early type dipstick and tube it would be OK to run (5mm??) over. Not so much with the later items installed. I suspect that this is where the info. from the dealer came from.
It was done because some cars were using oil (some valve stem oil seal leakage and low friction = low tension oil control rings) and customers were complaining. The extra oil was to ensure that that cars would maintain a safe oil level through the specified service interval and to reduce the incidences of customer complaints because the oil level was "low" i.e. if the high and low marks on the dipstick are 1L apart, -0.5L (say) = "half full" and complaint, if they are 1.5L apart, -0.5L = "2/3 full" and still OK.
That's how they come from the factory anyway. They are almost always topped up to full during the pre-delivery inspection though.
I always top mine up never to the full mark just down from it...a little over 3/4's.
