Its a shit of a job(major) the heater box has to come out,now is a good time to update to climate control if you dont have it & to replace the air con evaporator
if you do the evaporator the heater core wont cost much more to do because you already have everthing out to get acess to it anyway
I did my own heater core in 9& half hours straigth ,dont do it unless you have patients so much can go wrong when you put the dash back in and things tend to break because the plastic can be brittle

Before you even think about pulling apart the dash... grab a Gregory's manual. The whole process is outlined in the manual along with pictures.

To be honest, its pointless even attempting the job with out it! It is a shocker of a job to do, but if you have the manual there will be a bit less cursing going on.

Did the core replacement to my vp without taking out the whole box by draining out all the coolant completely cutting the brass pipes and with minimum fuss took the whole thing out and got new core and cut those lines and flared them with a improvised tool (large dyna bolt) put it all back in with 2 small hoses and 4 clamps over where pipes were cut and that was over 5 years ago.
I was looking in a aftermarket catalogue of heater cores a while ago and saw a replacement core you could get with a flange fitting on the pipes to do the same thing without using rubber hoses.

I'l second that. those things are worth their weight in gold. it might seem an expensive manual but it'll cover its own costs in no time. Saved me 100's when i tidied up my little old camry.
