ok.....
after a 300km drive, i found transmission oil on rear of car (on the boot) looked underneath & there was a slight leak on passenger side in engine bay from transmission hose, also the car started slipping gears & struggling to pick up speed.
for some reason there was too much transmission fluid in there.... so,
drained some out & fixed lea. The car ran fine for a day, changed gears A+, picked up speed, no problems....then....
the next day,car starts, wont go into gear.... nothing.
opened the bonnet and the dip stick for the trans was spat out & trans fluid was all over engine.
few suggestions given to me were:
tighten bands & replace trans pump & filter, or
replace the lot with a re-co gear box.
anyone else had this happen? got any ideas or suggestions?
Your series II should have a lockdown dipstick to prevent this happening but the design ain't perfect!. Sounds like the oil overheated and possibly boiled....rarely the trans oil cooler inside the radiator can leak coolant into the trans lines and this results in the coolant boiling in the trans and stuffing things etc.
If the trans was OK before the initial leak I'd give it a service - filter and fluid change and see how it goes. You cannot tighten the bands or play with the pump unfortunately and a reco will cost over $1000 so the service might be the best option.
