Unhappy Valley Gaskets - common fault ???

    Hi y'all

My VR has decided to leak coolant from the valley gasket. I can see it seeping out between the inlet manifold & the heads. Oh joy. Smells sickly sweet (new coolant) but is already leaving a sour taste in my mouth - had the car 3 weeks.

As you'd reckon, not much $$ for gaskets & o-rings but molto $$ for the ages it's gunna take to replace. Anyone else had this prob ? is it a common problem ?

About $70 for the 2 side manifold gaskets and 2 china wall gaskets from holden. The one that leaks is basically a hard plastic with some rubber/neoprene moulded into it .In time the neoprene shrinks hardens and lets coolant past the seal.
Common problem and not too hard to fix if you're handy with a few tools.

had the same problem, parts cheap as, labour will cost ya heaps, hope ya got a mate that knows how to do it, but yeh it is common, I thought it was my heater core at first because steam was coming inside the car but it was just coming in through the vents as it boiled on the manifold, know what ya mean by the smell, that was so sweet smelling.

Mine has done the same thing - but when we had it off we portmatched it to the heads at the same time - made a nice increase to throttle response!!

u dont mention if its a 6 or a V8. come across a few INJ V8's doing it now.the reason? holden didnt use any bloody sealant on the gaskets! if u got an 8 and have to replace them use sealant all over the gasket.

V6. 180,000 km. Looks like it has been doing it a while - no inhibitor left in the radiator. Must remember to do a midnight grease job on the previous owner's driveway. He bought a Ford anyway so karma will bite him in the a$$.

I'm paying someone to do it ... gettin too old for that stuff. Well, too busy at work earning enough money to pay for it. Doh
