Vs Transmission Question???? Need help asap. Thanks

Hi there. Can someone out there help me? I have a 1996 vs commodore sedan, i got it off ebay for 900 with a leaking trans. I've been filling it up all the time coz of the leak, but now its gotten to the point of the car not even really moving on take off, it revs high and wont go anywhere till it winds out and hits second where it slips to. Third aint so bad but fourth will surge. I'm changing the box asap but im not sure if the one i am getting will fit my vs! The second hand box is off ebay. The box is 6hdd but on the box that's already on my vs, it doesnt have anything saying what it is. I'm guessing the stickers been removed. So my question is..... Will a 6hdd box fit in a 96 vs? If someone can help with my problem that would be great. But please keep it simple as im no good with technical terms. Cheers guys

It should do - mines a '97 and has 7HDD. The number is the year the box was manufactured. A '96 will have 6HDD and a '95 a 5HDD generally speaking. Plus 95/6/7 are interchangeable.
