Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone has changed an air con condensor in a VR?
Is it straight forward? Any hints?
When I went to get re-gassed the pipe between the condensor and receiver dryer cracked (drivers side of receiver dryer)
Anyhow, my wifes compressor on series II VR is rooted, so I was gonna use hers to fix mine... any advice? (Can't find any how to's)![]()
Can't help you much except to tell you this is a common problem - read somewhere that it's caused by the compressor oil getting on the threads of the nut that clamps the aluminium pipe to the drier and the oil reacts when in contact with the atmosphere and does something strange to the aluminium....the oil used in the compressor is not "ordinary" oil! Also remember reading that you need to be very careful when attaching/removing the nut that hold the pipe on and use 2 spanners. Remember not to get any oil on the threads.
Good Luck.
Yeh i just took a look and it looks like the whole condensor has to be changed over, not sure what ill need to do to change it over, anyone?
The whole nut that is near the receiver dryer has exploded (it went kaboom!) and gas went everywhere!
I should post up a pic of it
I had mine done a few years ago. From memory, they had to take the front bar off, and also they cracked my windscreen trying to get the plastic panel off where the windscreen wipers are.![]()
Here's a pic, She's quiet rusty

So no one can hint to me the easiest way to remove it?

It should be pretty straight forward as long as you are extra careful when undoing the flange nuts on the pipes...make sure you use 2 spanners and avoid putting any stress on the aluminium tubing. You'll need a new receiver/dryer and the special (nitrile?) "O" rings to suit. At a guess I'd say the easiest way to remove the whole caboodle would be to remove the front bumper which is just a few screws and clips. Seal the end of pipes etc to prevent moisture etc entering the system as this will cause corossion and block the TX valve. There are some good articles on playing with aircons on google - in the US you can do re-gassing yourself.
From the look of your old dryer it probably is the original.
