Hi,probably been asked before, just needing to know how to set the timming on an efi v8,thanks
get a paper clip and set the ecu into diagnostic mode (search how-to on this site), then buy a dissy spanner for a holden v8, loosen the nut at the back of the manifold which is placed beside the dissy itself (which is a prick to get to, kneel on the radiator support bar and lean over the motor while its cold, also remove the engine covers and push the fuel lines out of the way which run alog the firewall) once the nut is JUST loose enough to spin the dissy, grab a timing light and hook it up to the battery and number 1 cylinder (number 1 is on drivers side, closest to bonnet) start motor and wave the timing light over the back of the crank (drivers side), this will display a small flashing light on a piece of flat metal beside the crank with ''lines'' on it, this is where you will determine where your timing is set at, its easiest to smear some chalk dust over it to make it clearer to see... there will be a thick line with thinner lines either side on the metal marker which the light is displaying on, to the left is advanced spark, to the right is retarded spark. each 'line'' either side of the solid one indicates a 2 degree difference... you want the light to display at 10 degrees which is 5 'lines'' to the left of the solid line on the marker.
To advance the timing spin the dissy to the left little by little, to retard spin to the right... when its set right let the motor cool down the tighten the bolt beside the dissyoverall not the easiest jobs to do on a efi v8 but possible with patience.
Just to clarify, the graduated timing marks are at the front of the engine near the drivers side of the crankshaft. There is a notch on the torsional damper hub (at the rear of the crankshaft pulley) that is used to line up with the timing marks. Ten degrees BTDC is the correct base timing.
