before i get flamed, i did some searching and didnt want to dig up a thread thats heaps old for a question...
I was looking at caramel wheels to remove the silicon shit from the door moulds, and on the Street Commodores forums I found that they say dont use it on acrylic paint cause it will root it. I have a '94 VR and I recon that it has acrylic? Were they talking crap, or should I use a different method to save my paintwork.
Cheers.
(sorry if this posted twice, my net died whilst posting it)
A caramel wheel will burn acrylic paint very quickly so I would advise not to do this or it will end up looking worse than it does now with all the black urethane on it. VS was the first of the commodores to use two pack paint so unfortunately your vr will be done in acrylic. I've never removed it from acrylic paint but have heard that things like big kevs goo remover and prepsol work ok. Do it when the panel is hot or alternatively warm it with a heat gun or similar and it should make it a bit easier. Make sure you give it a good polish and wax once your done as these product will remove any wax coating on it. Good luck and I hope you've got plenty of free time. Also I think the is a thread or two on this in the how to section,
yeah i read the how-to section before, but dont think it mentioned the removal of it on acrylic paint. I might try that goo remover, I got wax and grease remover from when I did the badges and it got the double sided tape off but had no luck with the silicon. I had a go when it was 46 degrees out here and it wouldnt budge with that stuff. I was going to try BAM but i recon it would stuff the paint. The crash shop round the corner quoted me over $100 to do it, I'd rather buy someone some grog on here hen I have the spare money to come do it lol.
Thanks for your help![]()
Have you removed the door moulds already.
Just add dish soap and water to a bottle and spray it down the carefully use a razor blade watch you dont scratch the paint. You can buy a scraper to attach the blade to.
It will be hard removing silicon. I was removing it from a car that i was respraying anyway and it killed me to get it all out without worrying about scratching the paint.
yeah all the moulds are gone just the silicon left. A guy from work suggested i cut up some shade cloth cause its a bit coarser so I might try that.
get as much as u can off with a razor blade then use very fine wet and dry with water to get off the rest
its alot easier
yeah dont go using a caramel wheel on the acrylic paint.. i have a vs put one of my panels is off of a vr... i was unaware of it being acrylic paint and went at it with a caramel wheel... took off the paint rather nicely![]()
series 1 VR were acrylic..series II VR were the first of the 2pak cars
which one is yours???
Smitty...with the VE SSv SII Sportswagon, VK race car and...Kwaka ZX12R
I wrecked mine using caramel wheel. 1993 metallic...Lucky I was getting a respray anyway.
I have a 94 Series 2.
Do did acrylic end S2 Vr or S1 VS. I really don't want to **** my paint from wrong info.
Would there be a code on the compliance plate where the paint code is to tell the two types apart?
I'm pretty sure the VS was the first.
all commodores built after March-April 1994 are 2pak. Series II VR definitely has 2pak paint, my old man used to have a panel shop and dealt with VR-VS's quite a bit so remember it pretty clearly
If you have the caramel wheel already try a tiny spot thats hidden.
If it doesnt damage the paint then use it. Otherwise if not just razor blade
and as mentioned wet sand the rest off then you can just buff the paint back up to shine again
Don't use a razor blade, my advise is get the caramel wheel and hit a small painted spot in the engine bay to see how it's effected - that's probably one of the best ways to tell.
At first I didn't have any luck with the wheel but I realised the drill I was using was too slow (I couldn't see the RPM), if it's not working on the urethane then increase the speed, then to get the smudged mess off use some cutters (brother in law used to be a spray painter so had some good cutters handy), and on the guards use the finest sandpaper you can find (2000+?) to get the spray around where the COMMODORE badges used to be (the wheel won't work on these outlines).
Best of luck and hope yours is 2pak, otherwise get some VS doors or take it to a panel beater to get them deleted.
