If you have some mates who know cars - Im not just talking about hoons with cut springs etc. - but someone who has proven they can do basic automotive repair like change head gaskets and water pumps and the like - get them to help you out. Also, you will save yourself a lot of money if you know exactly what you want.
For example: Rather than just walking into a shop and asking for a fully hektik 'zorst, go in and tell them you want a 2.5 inch diameter cat-back exhaust with 1 muffler and 1 hotdog resinator for a live axle vs commodore sedan. Knowing what you want means they cant slip extra costs in there hoping that you wont notice.
Also, look out on ebay for things like wheels, springs etc. You can often pick these up for cheap after others upgrade, I picked up a set of VK GTS alloys today - with tires for NZ$53.
Shop around mate, a few places (like real businesses) do certain jobs nice and cheap. Just make sure they aren't too dodgey, and try to speak to other customers if possible.
Good idea by taking it stage by stage. Most of us here are not all money bags, so thats the best plan. Anyway, you will find you will want to always be changing things that you have done, modding is a never ending process, so doing it step by step will allow you to save![]()
I would wait a little while. Youve just got the car, keen to play around with it I know, BUT if you wait a little you will be happier with the result.
I would get a gregorys manual and stuff for a service. Do a good service on it. Most important is to get familiar with the car and ensure its going to be reliable and run well.
Dont want to add all these things on but have an unreliable car and strapped for cash to get it running. You will find little problems as you go and you will need cash to fix these up.
If you wait you will have time to look around too. Work out what you like and dont like - read around on here on what other guys think of the various exhausts, rims, heights etc.
Just dont be too keen to get it all done at once. Just stagger the work a little. You can pick up on problems too. If you get a clunk a day after the suspension is done you know where to look. If you have it all done at once it can be hard to pinpoint problems.
There's plenty of lowered springs and sports shocks n stuff available for your car. Repco, pedders, etc will be happy to sell you what you like. Check out the site sponsors thread > GSL rallysport , you'll see some good prices in there.
For the engine, a good service and clean up will do it good. high flow air filter (lukey is cheapest ) .... and check out the sticky thread in the VR-VS forum on V6 developement.
spring changes should be left for professionals, I say this because i have had a few bad instances of lowering my cars with bad results...
so now if i am going to lower my car, i will get it done right the first time!
Eg lowered springs, harder suspension designed for lowered springs, adjustable pan hard rod, you need a wheel alignment...
Seriously, when it comes to changing the look of your ride you need to make sure you taking the cars safety seriously also! better safe than sorry!
also... having 17's you will not need to change your suspension type!
any ECU or memcal upgrades you'd want to do, I would suggest do a search on these forums, as there is everything you could possibly need to know about performance upgrades, memcal changes, exhaust setups, forced inductions, and the likes...
if you look at the top of this forum topic, there'll be a sticky thread Buick and Ecotec V6 Performance Upgrades
look here this is very detailed and very informative for new commers, and recent new aquired commodore owners!
When i was first learning cars, i grabbed a copy of the gregory's service manual for me vl. Read every page of it on the shitter, and then started with small maintenance jobs and moved up from there. If you read it all, and then goto do a job, it comes back to ya and a quick re read and u've got it.
I found this a great way to learn.
And also online forums, or reliable mates.
