hey guys I've got stockies on my VS s-pack and Im lookin to get some 18's or possibly 19's on her just to add some more street appeal but I've heard so many rumours about what size wheels are actually legal.. some people say 2" taller and 1" wider is ok, vicroads says as long as the rolling wheel diameter doesnt exceed 15mm over stock diameter and you can only upgrade the rim by 1" .. but yeh i see people driving around in their commodores with 20"s and stuff, how do they do it? my dad reckons an engineers report is the only "legal" option... you guys know of anything? thanks

move to nsw
dude dont worry about teh laws. i got 20s on my stato. and ive been defected heaps of times for other things. never rim size.
but wot do ya do about insurance etc? like if you get crashed into even and cops wanna get smart and say "that car shouldnt of been on the road in the first place because its not roadworthy"... you know how they are haha
you dont really have anything to worry about if you had 20's on a executive maybe but just go something like 18 for a daily or 19's and you will be right
People geting around with 20's ect are not doing it leagally is the short answer there. So its your call. Me personally i wouldnt risk it for insurance reasons. You could grab an engineers certificate if you wanna do it properly. They are a about $200 i think, depends who youspeak too. I got my modified brakes certified for about $160.
If thats what you really want then i would just get an engineers certificate for that price and its all legal for insurance and for the cops. After all its only the price of 1 tyre.
"..an engineers certificate for that price and its all legal for insurance and for the cops. After all its only the price of 1 tyre"
thats a good way to put it, if its only 200 i might aswell. Its only an issue if i crash the car, or more likely some turkey crash into me lol, thanks for the advive guys!![]()
theres a sticky somewhere about the tyre and wheel laws for vic.
i suggest finding and reading them
get the right size tyres, with the right load ratings and it will be fine
2" rule doesnt exist in vic. its 15mm maximum on rolling TYRE diameter, not wheel. the correct wheel and tyre combo wont require blowing money on an engineers certificate, unless you want to go ridiculous sizes, which will result in modifications needing to be done to accomodate them.= much more than $200
Got it from wollongong engineer. If you want his details i can PM it to you. Why 3G's to do a certificate. They only spend a bit of time looking at the work and test em out. If they are satisfied then band you got a certificate. Less than 2 hours work. Not bad a $1500 an hour, ill have that job.
not saying it will always work but 2 of my mates both wrote of their cars. 1. el xr6 - wheels spacers, chopped springs, 20s, mini spool and ambo tint 2. rodeo - ambo tint, 20s, wood grain steering wheel. both of them had full comp insurance and got their full payouts and got to nick all the good shit off the cars before they got towed. so i'd just get the wheels lol
a mate if mine got done for has 20" wheels only because the tires had the wrong load rating for the car. so check the load rating of your car to the tires.
