Exclamation Gearbox decided enough, was enough...

    I have a 1996 S2 Vs Statesman (S/Charged).

Gearbox lost Reverse gear, got some info and people tell me that once ya lose a gear the box has essentially s**t its self. So I'm bassicaly asking, is this true, is re-building it cheaper? Or getting a second hand box the way to go and fitting that in (Quoted $800 for a box from Steve orders auto's in Mobray - Note: I'm in Hobart, Tas).

How much effort are these to rip the old box out, and put a new one in?

Is the cost of replacing the box, not worth it, and sell the car as is.

Any opinions shall be nice, lol. Save me driving the missu's rolla too much please.

Sorry if all this is hard to understand.

cheaper to get a second hand wreckers one, get the people who are fitting it, to replace gear solinoids!
that's about as cheap as you can get it with out doing a rebuild!
I picked up a second hand trans for $400, it was almost breand new! new solinoids, filter and fluids, it runs like a dream again!!!
so i wouldn't imagine a rebuild is cost effective given the life these things don't have!

Yeah a rebuild can cost up to and exceeding the 2000 dollar mark. A second handy is definallty a cheaper option, however you dont always get a quality second hand box. Sus out whether it looks like its in good nic, is there a warrenty on the box?

You can usually pick up a box here on the mainland for about 400 bucks and its in decent enough condition, I would imagine being from Tassie they would be a bit more expensive.

It was cheaper for me to do a manual conversion than get a rebuilt auto!

Doesn't take a genius to work out which i chose!
