hey ppl i have a 1997 S2 VS commodore ute with a 5 speed getrag box in it and it has this terrible vibrating noise in it im an apprentice mechanic but i just need a second opinion .... at idle in neutral theres like a rattling chattering noise and when you put your foot on the clutch the vibrating stops could this be a thrust bearing or throwout bearing? or something worse... and sometimes around 2 - 3000 revs it starts to vibrate ? or is this just a commodore noise (dont ask me i had a land cruiser before this 2nd car! haha so yeah any help would be appreciated thanks guys
Id be guessing you're up for a new throw out bearing. Its not uncommon for these to go on manual boxes, especially if they are not replaced each time the clutch is.
ugh ok then thanks a great deal .... any idea what the price of a new bearing would be? and would that explain the vibration under revs?
Shouldn't be too much I think they're about $40 by themself (usually they come as part of a clutch kit) and how bad is the vibration? Usually its just a small vibration with a high pitch squeal/groan if that makes sense. Once you have the gearbox out you will be able to tell pretty quickly if this is whats giving you dramas, but unfortunately while its in the car it can be pretty hard to pinpoint exactly what it is.
umm its more of a rattling clunking noise it selects gears good as anything but it only rattles in neutral .. and when u put ur foot on the clutch it stops
its the throw out(aka thrust) bearing, mine is doing the same thing, but whilst its relatively quiet, i'm going to ignore it till it really dies, my clutch is on the way out anyway so i'll do the lot at once. If i get motivated, i'll do it then, otherwise a noisy throw out bearing can last for years, or chew the fingers off your pressure plate.
thats comforting to know haha
