The factory steering lock (when you remove the keys & turn the wheel it locks)on my VS statesman has stopped engaging.
Does this have anything to do with the ignition barrel?
I have a VS barrel that i bought ages ago for my old car it just needs to be set for a key by a locksmith,But before we do anything i just wanted to see if its the problem?
Apparently its pretty common for them to stop working.

I'm not aware that it's a common problem but then I'm no expert - I'd be very wary about taking too much time replacing the item - if it engages whilst you're driving it could be fatal.
Maybe a previous owner has lubricated the lock mechanism with too much oil and this has attracted dust etc making it jam. Good Luck.
i see it on about 90% of vr through to vt's, the barrells just get gumed up full of dirt etc, my vr did it and i fixed it for a while with graphite powder but is not clicking out anymore. i would get the other barrell recoded to your keys and swap them over also got the locksmith to lube it up while there in there....
Is replacing the barrell a pretty straight forward D.I.Y job?

yes codding the barrell is also but more time consuming, if thre is no how to in the howto section i can give you a step bye step (from memory) as i have done this several times. also a new barrell kit is worth like $80 or less at holden anyways.
