HI. Have a small problem I have a crackiling noise coming from near my drivebelt pulley GMH looked at it and said that my drivebelt trension was noisy and Quoted me $565 to fix it. are they talking about the pulley its self because I can get one from Repco for $40 dollars. can some one help please
They may be referring to springs and bearings in the tensioner so its not getting correct tension but that price sounds like a rip off. My pulley is noisy so i need to replace the $40 bit you mentioned. In the mean time I just add lubricant every now and then and it goes fine again, im told they have cheap bearings. The pulley is really the only part that should make noise as the tensioner doesnt really move. Maybe just clarify whats the problem to start with, testing your tensioner should not be difficult
go wreckers and change it yourself easy
The tensioner assembly itself is only a $40 part. Same thing happened in mine a few years back and I had Ultratune put a new one in for about $60 incl labour. $560??? That is surely a bad joke.

Buy it yourself and replace it.

Should I just change the pulley or the whole lot and do I have to take of my Power steering box or anything else to change the whole lot?
out of interest, how do you get the tensioner assembly out on an ecotec? as there is a cast coolant pipe, pressed into the block, blocking some of the bolts, attempts to remove one on a dead engine resulted in snapping the cast pipe :P
I guess the GMH were quoting for a new tensioner assembly which is quite expensive ($300+) and needs a bit of work to replace. If it's gone it usually makes squeaking noise and plays up, ie moves up and down even at constant revs. How about getting a second hand one for about $75 and doing it yourself? Will need to take the power steering pump off and perhaps the heater pipe and possibly a few other parts (it's been a while since I did it).
However, crackling noise may indicate worn out pulley bearing in which case a new pulley for about $40 will do the job. Use a long screwdriver trick to find out, ie put it hard up against the pulley bolt and listen to on the other end.
Not true. As I already stated the whole assembly cost me $60 including labour and that was done by Ultratune. When the assemble fails the sound is a horrible crackling sound. Far worse than that of a bad bearing in an idler pulley. You're going to need to get it fixed asap as you run the risk of throwing the drive belt and that can cause greater damage

Well, tell me where did you get a new one + installed for $60 and I'll go and get it done on my car as well. I replaced mine 5 years ago and got a second hand one from a wrecker for $50. The chepest new one that I could find sells on eBay for about $180 but it's for a newer version. Check: Commodore V6 Belt Tensioner Assembly . Not sure that we are talking about the same thing.
Yes, we're talking about the same thing. I must admit that this was 5 years ago also when I had mine done also. It was so bad it was lucky the belt stayed on. I limped it to Ultratune and said I need a new drive belt tensioner assembley. I returned later that afternoon, the job done and paid $60.

No way mate. They either made a mistake when they billed you or they replaced the pulley only which nowadays cost about $40 on its own. The rest of the assebly plus labour cannot be only $20. Call them now and ask for a quote. I bet it won't be under $300.
1. I know what the problem was and it wasn't just the pulley.
2. I know what I asked to be replaced
3. I asked for a quote on the whole tensioner BEFORE I took it there.
4. They know what they charged me and I know what was and was NOT replaced.
5. Whether or not you believe me is NONE of my concern!

If you did know you would have done it yourself. Nobody would look at your car for $60.
So what you're saying is that if I know exactly what the problem is I should be fixing it myself? Did it even occur to you that at the time I might not have the tools required to do the job? You really are fast becoming a big pain in the arse around here. You ask a question, I reply and then you tell me I'm wrong? Here's a big 'F$^k off' to you![]()

Haven't been on this forum for a while and just now found the 'reply' from the above clown. His words say more about himself than he realises. Not worth futher comment.
Nevertheless, sutto, I've replaced it twice on my cars (VN & VR), both times after receivng quotes from mechanics in excess of $300. First time, around 10 years ago, I paid about $190 for a new tensioner and second time, about 5 years ago, $50 for a 2nd hand one from a wrecker. It took me about an hour to replace it.
