Default is shaving ecotec heads worthwhile?

Wanting to increase power without spending lots of cash .. how would a standard ecotec respond to shaved heads ? say 040 thou, or 1mm to give it some more compression. By my thinking this should give some more power without increasing fuel !!! Double bonus ... ?
What do you reckon , are there any downsides to this in terms of idle or driveability, would the inlet manifold still fit ?

Nah I wouldn't do that, alot of VS's allready struggle with the compression they have now. You would need a cam with more duration if you were going to increase the compression anymore than it is

BUGGER !! Coming from the master himself i tend to believe.
What probs would it cause ? pinging i guess.
Back in the torana days this was one of the most common mods. Shame it doesn't aork any more.
So what happens when people blow their head gasket and need to get it decked ? do they just shave it enough to get it flat , and that don't cause probs ?
Reason for asking is i'm getting a little rocker / lifter noise in me ecotec thats done 240K. I'm thinking of doing a full head swap. and address those issues at the same time. So for ageing ecotecs is it usually the top end or bottom that lets them down first ?

Yeah they ping very easily, I don't think you would need much more compression to cause issues in alot of them (they aren't all the same but still). if your going to be pulling it apart that far however you may as well put a little cam in it? then you would get away with the compression. Spun bearing from old age is usually what break the V6's first

how much can you lower the compression with copper gaskets? for boost applications that is.

Just thought i'd jump in while we are on the subject :P

ha ha ha . i remember putting 149 heads with big valves that near touch onto 186 to hot them up. twin or triple carbs, set of headers and a cam you were hot stuff. glad im not there any more.

ah OK, so you need more fuel in the chamber if the compression if higher.
And just so i can be sure, which bearing do you mean spun bearing ? Is that a cam bearing, big end .... i can't imagine a big end spinning tho ?
Thanks for the help. oh, and any suggestions on little cams while we're here ?

yeah cam bearings always spin in the 6's ive been told by allot of mechanics.

Apparantly not doing frequent oil changes is the nail int he coffin for the cam bearings.
